About the Author
Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. He co-authored his first textbook on using Excel as a statistical tool. Today, Mr. Carey has authored or co-authored more than 20 leading academic and trade texts for the software industry.

Ms. Carol DesJardins spent 25 years in the private sector as a programmer, systems analyst and eventually Chief Information Officer. During that time, she honed her skills with Excel as an analysis tool. She transitioned her knowledge to the classroom and has taught several applications and programming courses. Ms. DesJardins co-authored her first textbook on Excel. In addition to writing, she continues to teach at St. Clair County Community College.

Ms. Ann Shaffer has contributed to several books about computers, including NEW PERSPECTIVES ON MICROSOFT WORD. She began a career in textbook publishing as a Development Editor for William C. Brown and is now a freelance technical editor and writer. Ms. Shaffer holds a Master's degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

What would inspire ornery old farmer John Skipton to enter his 20-year-old workhorse in a pet show? Why, love, of course. Mr. Skipton has worked hard all his life, so hard in fact that he never had time for marriage, children, or "pets." He was always too busy tending the sheep and the cows or harvesting the fields and orchards. However, as old and gruff as he appears to be, he takes time every day to take a pitchfork full of fresh hay to his two old carthorses, Bonny and Dolly, who've been retired for more than 12 years. After years of pulling ploughs and wagons, and doing all the hard work that tractors do now, the two old horses lead a life of leisure down near the river, quite a steep climb for an old man like Skipton. When the country vet suggests the farmer enter Bonny in the Darrowby Fair Pet Show, Skipton dismisses the idea without consideration. But over the course of the next week, the old fellow changes his mind and makes a surprise appearance at the pet show. The lovely illustrations depicting the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire dales, the handsome horses, and the lively inhabitants of the community attending the fair bring an old-fashioned beauty to the telling of this charming tale. --Colleen Preston

Old John Skipton tends his two aging cart horses well, even though they've been replaced by a tractor. He shows up at the Darrowby Fair with his grey horse, Bonny, as an entry in the Family Pets Class of showings. Both John and Bonny are dressed up and polished for the occasion, standing in line with other unusual pets and their owners: a pink piglet, a turtle, a nanny goat and a hooded falcon. But the winner is John's Bonny. Herriot, the all-seeing veterinarian, inspires his simple message of sensitivity and compassion by showing how much his characters love and care for their animals. The dimensions of thoughtful humor are as evident in this story as in all his writings. Brown's accompanying paintings add a necessary context, depicting, for example, the piglet's owner as a farm boy, the rabbit's as a sweet-faced little girl and the falcon's as a stately country gentleman. Grade 1-4 Herriot relies on a personal experience to create an endearing human interest story. This story centers on a gruff old farmer and his two retired carthorses who, for the past 12 years, have provided their owner with companionship. After seeing the farmer care for his horses, Herriot encourages him to enter one of the mares (the other is nursing a sore leg) in the family pet class of a local animal show. The farmer spruces up both himself and the horse for the big show and walks away with top honors. Readers, old and young alike, are bound to be moved by this simple tale, as Herriot again shows the deep feelings that can be experienced between human beings and animals. Brown's soft, exquisite paintings nicely capture the mood of the characters and the picturesque English countryside. A lovely book that adults will enjoy sharing with and distributing to children. LITTLE BOOK WITH A BIG STORY

Bonny's Big Day by James Herriot is a take off from one of the marvelous stories that Herriot records in one of his collections of "big people books" and happens to be one of my favorite. This is actually the story of John Skipton and one of his two old work horses and the relationship and love between man and horse. Each, John and the horse Bonny are long retired after a long life of constant toil making a living on an English farm long before they, the farms became mechanized.

Briefly, at Herriot's prompting and encouragement, the old farmer enters his beloved horse Bonnie in a local, and for the area, traditional pet show.

James Herriot is a master story teller and I must confess, one of my all time favorite authors. I have read all of his books many times over and enjoy each reading more than the previous. I will, about every other year, give each of them a rereading. With this series of children's books, the stories that Herriot wrote are incorporated with the art work of Ruth Brown, an illustrator of no mean talent. She has captured rural England of that era perfectly and her soft flowing colors and style add perfectly to Herriot's words.

The nice thing about this book, and the others of the series, is that the young reader is exposed to some very good writing, good art work, history, the idea of compassion, and an era long gone by that we will never see again. I guess I am trying to say that these books are not only readable and enjoyable, but that the kids actually get something out of them and the adult certainly gets their monies worth.

This book belongs in any children's library and as a matter of fact, is quite enjoyable for the adult reader also. I do highly recommend it. These books make a great read for a group and I use them all of the time as such.

Beautifully written, poignant, funny and engaging

James Herriot writes beautiful multi-layered stories which really engage the reader, and in this case the audience. This is one of his children's storys, which despite the shortness, is beautifully written.

As you may know, James Herriot was a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales in the North of England in the middle of the 20th century. His storys of eccentric families, and farmers have sold in the millions. His series of children's stories are equally rich and funny. This is the story of Bonny the clydesdale, and her owner. Herriot has been called out to Dale Close farm where the farmer has a problem with one of his horses. They go for a long and arduous walk to visit the horses, which Herriot finds difficult, but the farmer seems completely untired by. The horses are old, but in a beautiful valley, where the farmer has retired them. To Herriot's amazement, the farmer does the walk every day. They have been retired for 12 years, but because they worked so hard to help him establish the farm, he keeps them there ni retirement. Herriot suggests the farmer enters one of the horses in the Darrowby Fair that coming Saturday in the Pets class as they are clearly kept as pets now. The farmer sounds discouraging, but then, the following saturday he turns up at the fair......

This is a wonderful story and I guarantee it will move your heart to read it. The detail is extraodinary and evocative, and I am sometimes moved to tears by it when I read it.

The illustrations are pretty good - they could be richer, but overall, I just think this story is 110%. Something to really enjoy.

About the Author
Suzanne Bell, PhD, holds a degree in chemistry from New Mexico State University and an MS in forensic science from the University of New Haven. She is currently an associate professor of chemistry and director of the Bell Research Group at West Virginia University. Bell s previous work has been published in Journal of Chemical Education, Analytical Chemistry, and Journal of Forensic Science. Bell is author of The Facts on File Dictionary of Forensic Science, cited by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title, 2004. She lives in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Excellent manual!

I may be biased because Dr. Bell works in my department, but I've never personally had her as a professor. The book is excellent and offers a very detailed look at forensic chemistry. It covers a wide range of forensic chem topics from drug analysis to arson investigation. My favorite part is the numerous sidebars which include case studies or nuances that really help you to appreciate how useful the information in the text can be. I would recommend this text to anyone from a beginner to a professor.

Good Book, Terrible Binding

I wish to start off by stating that the binding of this book is terrible. I had to purchase this book for a class and myself, as well as numerous colleagues, experienced the pages being removed from the spine of the book. I'm stating this as a precautionary tale since I was pretty unhappy buying this book new only to experience broken binding in multiple areas of the book within weeks of the purchase. If this book is a necessity, I would simply advise replacing the spine of the book or possibly removing the cover altogether, using a hole punch, and placing the pages into a 3-ring binder. Otherwise, you will continuously be annoyed at the book tearing at the seams. About the text itself, I appreciated the thorough detailing of the concepts, wide variety of forensic related topics, and informative mini history lessons. There were a few minor errors in chemical structure or vocabulary usage, but not enough to subtract from the overall appeal of the book since mistakes can be found in almost all books. Forensic Chemistry can be used as a great resource for both budding chemistry students and more esteemed scientists due to the excellent reference listing at the end of each chapter, as well as generalized and specific chemistry related information. If you can get past the binding issue, the book is fairly entertaining and enlightening.

Knows his stuff

I'm going to be brewing an alt and I got a recipe on line, and also have a couple of how-to-brew-beer books, BUT I had too many unanswered questions. This is relatively small, very concise, clearly written book on alts, by a man who hails from that part of Germany and learned how to brew them himself. Because it's a book specifically about altbier it covers territory that other brew books don't. An example: "If you prime your beer, avoid sugar, which can contribute a slightly sour aftertaste to the brew. Always use light dried malt extract (DME) istead." That statement, of course, refers to altbiers. He covers commercial, homebrew all-grain, and homebrew extract methods of brewing. This isn't a book for the first time brewer, however I've only got two batches under my belt and this book has clarified enough for me to proceed with confidence. Another bit of handy information included in the book: for those of us who have a regular old fridge, he points out that the temperature range of most of them falls between 40- 60 degrees fahrenheit. 60 degrees can be used for primary fermentation and 40 degrees is at the upper limit of the alt lagering temperature. Therefore, an unmodified refridgerator can be used for altbier making. Thanks Horst. Recipes in the back for one barrel, 5 gallons all-grain and 5 gallons extract.

Makes a mighty fine brew.

Being a homebrewer for 4 years, I have found that Brewers Publications' Classic Beer Styles Series is an excellent resource for discovering and making numerous quality brews. In Altbier, Horst Dornbusch tackles a style that few people may have ever had. His approach is practical and to the point. The history section is thorough without being long-winded, as is sometimes the case with other books in the series. Mr. Dornbusch has done an excellent job applying his own brewing knowledge in explaining the ins and outs of altbier brewing. I have followed some of the recipes in the book, and I am extremely pleased with the results so far. The only downside to this book is that the section on style profile could have been more thorough and descriptive. However, this book is well worth the investment.

German ale you never heard of - Useful, if not 100% accurate

This guide purports to tell you how to brew an authentic Altbier ("Old Beer"). The vast majority of beers brewed in Germany are Lagers. Altbier is one of the few German ales that still exists, but is only brewed in a small area in and around Dusseldorf. The style is pretty rare. I don't think you can get authentic German Altbier in the United States, so you have to brew it. I am a home brewer and have brewed this beer.

The book gives an interesting history of Altbier, description of the style, ingredients, equipment and methods of brewing. Altbier is an ale that is mashed using a 3 to as much as 5 step temperature mash, fermented at moderately low temperature (60-62F), and conditioned at lagering temperatures.

With most homebrewing books you can skip right to the recipes. Unfortunately, the recipes here are not fully developed. Instead of complete recipes the author calls them "guidelines". They are basically just ingredients and specifications. You must refer back to the text for specifics on mash schedule, boil time, hops addition timing, fermentation procedure, and conditioning instructions, as these are not included in the recipes. The author could have made it lot easier for the reader by simply including these in each recipe as most home brewing books do.

There are some inconsistencies in the book. For instance, under mashing the author states that "Total mash times for alt vary from a low of 150 to a high of 170 minutes." However, when he details the mash procedure, the mash times total no higher than 100 minutes, and the specific procedure he recommends for the home brewer is only 60 minutes total.

The biggest flaw is that most of the recipes include ingredients that would NOT be included in an authentic Altbier. In an effort to make things easier for the American home brewer, the author formulated the recipes using ingredients he thought would be easily accessible, rather than purely authentic. As a result, the recipes are a re-creation or simulation of an Altbier, but are not 100% true to the style. In particular, the majority of the recipes contain American crystal malt, primarily for color. However there is NO crystal malt used in an authentic Altbier.

The author revealed in an email that the color in the darker Dusseldorf Altbiers comes not from crystal but from the addition of a malt-essence coloring agent called SINAMAR, an extract made by the Weyermann Malting Company of Bamberg. It was invented in 1903. SINAMAR is made from dehusked Weyermann Carafa malt. Because the grain base of this product is dehusked, there is no bitterness associated with this liquid, just dark concentrated color.

When the author wrote the manuscript for the Alt book in 1997/8, SINAMAR was not available in North America, so he never mentioned it. He fudged and resorted to crystal malt for color in the book. To avoid roasty notes, he kept the color value to no more than 60 Lovibond. The results are simulations of Altbier but if you are a purist you should know that the addition of crystal malt is inaccurate. Now, SINAMAR is available in the United States, where it is imported and distributed by Crosby & Baker. Unfortunately the book never mentions it so we have to do our own formulating. As a guideline, 4 oz. will add 16 SRM units to 5 gallons. SINAMAR is used to add color only, it does not effect flavor or add roasted notes. If you are not a stickler for authenticity, go ahead and use the crystal. I used Weyermann Caramunich and Carafa malts to darken my altbier instead of American crystal malt, because these are German products and I believe truer to style. Another alternative might be to use a tiny amount of debittered black malt for color, or just leave out the crystal altogether.

The one completely authentic recipe in the book is the "Enderlein's Alt". This is actually a clone of Schumacher Alt, still brewed in the oldest altbier brewpub in Dusseldorf (and thus probably the world). It uses only one type of grain, a two-row Pils malt kilned to a pale Munich color rating of 6.5. It uses only German Hallertau hops. Any darkness in the color comes strictly from the Malliard Reaction that occurs in the long boiling time (up to 120 minutes). The formulation was supplied by Mr. Herbert Enderlein, the brewmaster at Brauerei Ferdinand Schumacher so this is the real deal.

Altbier is nearly a lost art and is mostly off the radar of today's hop-heavy craft beer seekers. Pick this book up if you want to explore some beer making history and try your hand at brewing a very traditional style with noble hops and a classic Old World taste.

For many French readers The Opposing Shore (published as Le rivage des Syrtes ), with its theme of transgressions and boundaries, spoke to the issue of defeat and the desire to fail: a paticularly sensitive motif in postwar French literature. But there is nothing about the novel tying it either to France or to the 1950s; in fact, Gracq's novel, with its elaborate, richly detailed prose, will be of greater interest now than at any point in the last twenty years.

The Masterpiece

Until I read this book, Buzzati's "Il deserto dei tartari" was my favorite novel, perhaps my only novel, the only one I cared to keep re-reading through life. This is, remarkably a very similar story about the antichamber of anticipation (rather than "the antichamber of hope" as I called Buzzati's book), but written in a much finer language, by a real writer (Buzzati was a journalist, which made his prose more functional) ; the style is lapidary with remarkable precision; it has texture, wealth of details, and creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. Once you enter it, you are stuck there. I kept telling myself while reading it: "this is the book". It suddenly replaced the "deserto".
A few caveats/comments. First, I read it in the original French Le Rivage des Syrtes (French Edition), not in this English translation, but I doubt that the translator can mess up such a fine style and the imagery. Second, the blurb says Gracq received the Goncourt prize for it. Julien Gracq REFUSED the Goncourt, he despised the Parisian literary circles and by 1951 decided to stay in the margin. He stuck to his publisher Jos� Corti rather than switch to the fancy Gallimard after his success (as Proust did) (or other publishing houses for the fakes and the selfpromoters). Third, this book came out a few years after Buzzati's "deserto", but before Buzzati was translated into French. I read the original in French "Le Rivage des Syrtes", poetic, refined, passionate, with chiselled descriptions of landscapes -Gracq is originally a geographer. The whole novel is permeated with an atmosphere of new age poetic doom. It is related to Dino Buzzati's Desert, and was written in approximately the same time (pre war Europe when barbarians were at the gate) but has more depth, more warmth and wealth of details and emotions. Le Rivage des Syrtes is also a jigsaw of geographical and historical references drawn from Persia, Egypt and Venice - reflecting the neverending conflict between civilisation and barbary. But who is who ? This book deserves more international exposure. Read it, it is mesmerizing. The French editor - Jose Corti - sells it with pages which you have to cut open, adding charme to the journey into Gracq's mythic world.

Even in translation you can feel the lyrical intensity and beauty of this novel which creates an atmosphere of tension which no reader will forget easily: Aldo, a young nobleman, has had enough of the decadence of his native Vezzano, a fictitious republic modeled on Venice. He has himself posted to a navy base which was once built to defend Vezzano against Farghestan. The two powers are still officially at war, but nothing has actually happened for 300 years. Now, however, there is a growing tension, not just inside Aldo, who dreams of the unknown Farghestan. People in Vezzano seem to be tired of its eternal stability, they long for action...
Most of the novel's plot takes place near the old navy base, which is surrounded by a desert landscape which is described with mesmerizing intensity. Little incidents are building up towards an explosion which is only hinted at in the book. People waiting for something to happen in a more and more uncanny slience - that may remind the reader of the fact that the book was written before and during World War II. The decadence longing for action, danger and change, however, seems to me reminiscent of World War I. This is not a book of easy historical analogy. It is a unique work of art which stands completely on its own.

Do yourself a favor - read this book.

I bought this book expecting it to be the same old, same old entrepreneur book. Not the case at all. Learning from successful entrepreneurs from a wide range of fields opened my eyes to mistakes I have made and didn’t know it, and mistakes I was bound to make had I not read the book. Such a great read I could not put it down. I wish I had been able to read it sooner in life. INSIGHTS is a must read for not only entrepreneurs, but all people in the business world.

Outstanding... This is a fun and insightful look at entrepreneurship from 101 different angles. It's an anthology for seasoned and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. Many of the contributors have written their own books on the subject yet offer new insights here, especially when strung together seamlessly by Mr. LoPresti. I wish I had read this before I launched my own startup, which is no longer in business... I'm looking forward to the hardcopy version since this would make a great gift.

A Scholarly and Academic Volume

This book is a researched study by an excellent professional historian, Charles Downer Hazen. It looks at the published writings of prominent Americans regarding their opinions toward what was happening in France before and during the Revolution. Of particular interest is the writing of Thomas Jefferson, who traveled widely in France and recorded social conditions before the actual out break of Revolution. The most important insight that I was able to gain from reading is the difference in the Constitutional structures of the two nations. Whereas the US government was already established and working at the time , the French chose not to emulate the American system of checks and balance ie a two house congress and a separate executive and judicial body. By not separating the Powers, the new French Republic was doomed to failure and deteriorated into tyranny and violence. Other well known and not so well known political thinkers are featured. This book is not a novel, nor fiction and its appeal is to students, or those like myself, who are not historians but consumers of fine historical writings.
