Uncaged (The Singular Menace, 1), by John Sandford, Michele Cook

A New York Times bestseller!

John Sandford and Michele Cook debut a high-octane thriller series about a ruthless corporation, unspeakable experiments, and a fight to expose the truth. Perfect for fans of James Dashner's The Maze Runner.

Shay Remby arrives in Hollywood with $58 and a handmade knife, searching for her brother, Odin.

Odin’s a brilliant hacker but a bit of a loose cannon. He and a group of radical animal-rights activists hit a Singular Corp. research lab in Eugene, Oregon. The raid was a disaster, but Odin escaped with a set of highly encrypted flash drives and a post-surgical dog.

When Shay gets a frantic 3 a.m. phone call from Odin—talking about evidence of unspeakable experiments, and a ruthless corporation, and how he must hide—she’s concerned. When she gets a menacing visit from Singular’s security team, she knows: her brother’s a dead man walking.

What Singular doesn’t know—yet—is that 16-year-old Shay is every bit as ruthless as their security force, and she will burn Singular to the ground, if that’s what it takes to save her brother.

*Starred Review* In the dead of night, young animal-rights activists sneak into Singular Corporation, a biomedical research lab in Eugene, Oregon, and release hundreds of mutilated animals. Odin, the group’s tech wizard, makes off with a bag of encrypted thumb drives and a sickly dog in tow. The group is forced to go underground to avoid repercussions from Singular. Odin’s sister, Shay, follows his trail to Los Angeles, where she stumbles into excitement of her own after meeting an eccentric artist, Twist. After Odin is kidnapped, it’s up to Shay, Twist, and a posse of street-savvy teens to take down a powerful corporation and rescue him. The action is swift and expertly paced in this first title in the new Singular Menace thriller series. Readers are immediately drawn into the passion of the young activists, counterbalanced by the cool menace of the Singular villains. The authors paint quick, vibrant episodes that flash like scenes from a movie: the girl with red hair rappelling down the side of a mirrored building; the vacuous face of a man with a plate covering his skull; daredevil car rides through the Malibu hills. The result is a fabulous mix of outlandish hijinks, techno-noir, and teen cheek—L.A. style. Not to be missed.HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Sandford’s Prey series for adult readers has brought him a huge fan base, and the top-level marketing plans for this series starter will widen that enormous audience. Shay to the rescue!
By clockwooAmielAmazon Customer
Uncaged by John Sandford & Michelle Cook is the most interesting book I ever read. In the beginning it hooked me and dragged me into the book so unexpectedly that I didn't even have time to think. This book kidnapped me and held me hostage in the book world until my mom came into the room and got me out.

This book got me to the edge of my seat. This book reminded me of an action movie. See, that’s the great thing about books, you get to picture all the settings and characters however you want.I really want someone to make a movie based on this book. That’s how much I love it.

Uncaged is about a red-headed girl named Shay.Shay is the main character in the book.Even though she is only 16,she is very mature and very caring. Shay is looking for her “Raider” brother Odin. She meets a guy named Twist (my favorite character) who is the protagonist in the book because he is very nice to shay and lets her stay at his hotel. She makes friends with everybody at the hotel like Cruz,Cade, and her roommate Emily and they agree to help Shay find her brother. This group goes on many adventures and does many good cause crimes like climbing on the Hollywood sign to find her brother. They release information on a website about these torturing people named Singular, who kidnapped her brother. They threaten Singular by releasing more information about them until they give her Odin back.

Uncaged is an AWESOME book. Also another great thing about it is that it is a series, so it doesn’t end at there. I can’t wait to finish Outrage, and start Rampage. Again Uncaged is such a good book.I TOTALLY recommend reading this book, I promise it won’t let you down.

Not Close to Sandford excellence
By Trish
I have read every John Sandford book and eagerly wait for the next Davenport or Flowers masterpiece. Unfortunately this one failed to live up to the low standard that the authors set for it. Sandford is at his best in Minnesota and my Western Wisconsin, where, for some reason, most of his most evil criminals come from. Stay at home!

I made a MISTAKE.
By Dennis H. Kevonian
NO! Sorry, because I usually love John Sandford's novels. I read all his work and along with Michael Connelly they are the two most prolific writers of this genre. That said, this book is a big fat flop. The novel seems aimed at a "younger" crowd, and if I didn't know better, I'd think it was a spinoff of "The Hunger Games" or those stupid "vampire" teeny pieces of junk.

This novel pits a huge company with vast resources (money and para-military), against determined homeless teens and animal rights activists.
Without giving away the plot (don't worry , there isn't much to give away!), the company does horrific experiments on all sorts of animals, supposedly for medical research, but what are they really DOING!!! That's about it. Don't worry, our intrepid teens will win the day. OH WAIT, this novel is just the FIRST one of a series!! That's right, nothing gets resolved so they can sell another of these clunkers--NOT TO ME!!

I couldn't wait to get to the end of this mess, and I won't read another collaboration with these two ever again. It's your choice, but if you're expecting primo Sandford, you'll be dissappointed as I was.
