Has Christianity Failed You?, by Ravi Zacharias

In 2006, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) held an open forum at the Fox Theater in Atlanta to address the subject: “Has Christianity Failed You?” Tickets were sold for the event and―to the complete surprise of everyone―the event was sold out with a capacity crowd of over 5,000. People lined up offering to buy tickets from folks in line for higher prices.

Before the event, an RZIM cameraman walked the streets and asked people if they had rejected the faith they held at one time. One answered that, because of a Christian’s rejection of his gay lifestyle, he had done just that. Another answered that she had left her faith because she had fallen into adultery and could never live it down in the church. Others had their own reasons. Some said it was just intellectually untenable in an age of reason. They chose to come to the event to judge if there were adequate answers.

It is estimated that for every one person who writes a letter or attends an event, there are one thousand who agree. If the Atlanta crowd was any indication, the question is real and troubling.

Why is it that many live with silent doubt, many leaving the “evangelical fold” for something else? Is there something wrong with the message, the communicator, the hearer…or is it all three?

It’s time to ask the hard questions of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and why it seems as though God has made it so hard to continue believing. In fact, the son of a prominent U.S. Senator phoned me with that very question. “Why has God made it so hard to believe in Him?” Such skepticism is not just representative of the hostile; it also represents many honest questioners.

This book attempts to lay out the response to those within as well as those outside the Christian faith so as to understand what it is we believe and why it is so hard to do so. More to the point: Why it is actually so hard to deny God and still make sense out of life? In the end the answers should be both felt and real, with the added truth that God is nearer than you think. He desires that we sense Him very near to us and not distant. But closeness comes at a cost just as any relationship of love and commitment does.

Review
'This is a book of simplicity, subtlety, and beauty. Weaving together memorable anecdotes with graceful prose and striking observations, Ravi Zacharias gives us Christian solutions not only for the head but also for the heart.' -- Dinesh D'Souza, , author of What's So Great about Christianity

From the Back Cover
Internationally acclaimed apologist Ravi Zacharias asks the hard questions about what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. In his landmark new audio book on CD, he addresses the struggle he hears from both skeptics and Christ-followers: Has Christianity failed us? And can irrefutable charges be brought against it by skeptics and disappointed believers alike? Exploring topics such as 'Who Is Jesus?' 'How Does a Person Get Close to God?' and 'Are Purpose-Driven and Reason-Driven Always at Odds?' Zacharias explains head-on why so many people today have given up on faith. In the end, he asks whether it is God, or whether it is the Church---as God's representative---that has failed. And more dramatically, he asks if the irrational ends of the skeptic's worldview without God risk the very existence of humanity. Zacharias speaks for anyone who has left the church literally or emotionally, who lives with silent doubts about God, or who knows that Jesus is the answer---but has forgotten the question. Here, he will change how you see Jesus, how you see yourself, and how you see the way your life is meant to be lived.

Has Christianity Failed You?
By Billye
Between the ages of 18 and 52, I was filled with anger and bitterness toward God because of my experience with the church of my youth. It turns out that I did not have an accurate view of God, thinking He was like the people in my church, liking you when you obeyed and were "good" but rejecting you when you disobeyed and were "bad." God is not like that; He loves always, even when we turn our back on Him. He is always near, ready to comfort, strengthen, and empower when we turn to Him. Wake up people! diligently seek God and make up your own mind. if we seek Him, we will find Him. Wake up church! teach people how to seek God and to think rightly for themselves, not just swallow whole what "leaders" in the congregation say. The book points out that God (Christ and Christianity) has not failed us; we have confused imperfect Christians in the church with God, and it is they who have failed us. We are no longer children, it is time to take responsibility for our own lack of faith and failure to diligently seek God, and repent.

I am possibly biased
By Jennifer Berry
Yes I loved this book. It is full of Ravi's wonderful clear logic and real life examples. However I am an avid Ravi fan. I find his insights cut to the depths of who we really are as a species. Humanity is exposed for its beauty and its tyranny. Its perception and its capacity for self deception.
Many people feel that Christianity has failed them, but in reality Christianity is not for the feint hearted. It is a tough calling and some people just want an option that isn't so much hard work.
The book tackles big issues like unanswered prayer, which is never a simple thing, and it does so with sensitivity and grace. I loved this book but I am a 'Ravi'ite. If you are not or don't know if you are I suggest trying a sample if you have a kindle. However whether you are Christian or once where or just wonder if Christianity is all it's cracked up to be I recommend reading this book and asking yourself the hard questions about why you believe what you believe. If nothing else I am sure it will be thought provoking and it may just open a new chapter in your life.

Ravi provides sensitive, informative, interesting, and most importantly, incredibly wise views that stimulate our own thinking on this important topic that most christians have, or will deal with at some stage of their discipleship.
He is truly one of God's special gifts to the body of Christ and provides all who have had the benefit of listening to him, or reading his writings, solid and deep foundations to their faith. This book will further add to the grounding and development of your faith.
