About the Author
Fred Beisse teaches Computer Information Technology at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, where he has designed and led courses in user support, information analysis and visualization, project management, and geographical information systems. Beisse builds on more than 30 years of experience in computer management positions, where he has been responsible for end-user support, computer services, computer facilities planning, and operations management.

Carefully Review Before Purchasing

Like most College-Focused textbooks, this $134 text is designed to be used in a classroom setting. There are problems though. Many of the earlier chapters contain a lot of extraneous "padding". A chapter with a large portion devoted to a history lesson on computer technology. Another chapter mainly describing communication basics. Yet another mainly devoted to business writing. These are topics better handled in other courses with other books. I have also worked with the included help desk software called "HelpStar". This is a rather poorly designed also-ran in the field of user support software, of which there are many better examples. For colleges looking to include this in their curriculum, be aware that a lot of the included "assignments" at the end of chapters are mainly in the form of "Look up this topic and write a paper on it". There is an included testbank but the questions are often just vocabulary based. There is also included a trial version of Microsoft Project but I still cannot see how well the use of Gantt charts fits in with a course on help desk operations.

Parts of the text focus on the subject matter, but for over $100, it is hard to recommend this text. I would advise a long look at all of the material in this book before purchasing. It may be what you are looking for but the title alone does not truly describe what you will find inside.

HelpSTAR program won't install from CD

The HelpSTAR student edition, which comes with the book, will not install. Tried it on a Windows XP computer and and a Windows 7 computer. Sat there for the better part of an hour on the windows XP before it tells you at the end there is a Fatal error and it didn't install. There doesn't seem to be any help if you have a problem with it. Says not to contact HelpSTAR with the problem, but to see your instructor. Guess you're out of luck if you are doing it on your own. I guess the fact that HelpSTAR is a HELPDESK business doesn't mean a thing lol. Very disappointed.

A Solid Start

This book was used as a text book for my college course. I have been working in the IT industry for many years; however, the opportunity to get my degree has me back in the classroom.

The book shows tremendous insight into the "behind the scenes" activities needed to provide good end-user computer support. It was well written and the author did a good job drawing contrast to the things that work and the things to do not.

My only complaint is that some of the chapter questions are a bit subjective and in some cases the answers run contradictary to the chapter text. Even so, it is a great starting point for people that want to become computer support supecialist.

SPECIAL THANKS to the publisher of the Kindle version of this book. Lessor publishers fail to include "Page Numbers" in the Kindle version and you only have "Location" numbers. Location numbers are useless if you are trying to assist (or get assistance) to/from someone with the physical print book.

Great sneak peak at TV's future

My big takeaway from this book: While there are 500 channels on TV, there are a vastly larger number of companies, some very clever, trying to figure out ways to update, enrich, and monetize the viewing experience. Wolk has provided an authoritative survey of the television ecosystem. Along with being well written, I found the book inspiring. It gave me hope that the industry will keep churning out great content like The Wire and Walking Dead, and keep figuring out better ways to deliver that content to consumers. I personally look forward to that day in the not-so-distant future when I can speak into my phone, “I want to watch the Sopranos show where Big Pussy gets whacked,” and an intelligent engine will locate that very episode and in seconds I’ll be watching it. Apparently, that and a million other changes are in the works. Wolk’s excellent book provides a fun and thought-provoking sneak peak.

A must-read on the future of TV

I tore through this book in a weekend and I can't say enough good things about what a useful, insightful overview it provides about where TV has been and where it's going. As someone working in the OTT industry, this is the exact book I wish I had when I started working in the field, and one that I recommend for absolutely anyone at any level of experience. If you're new to the field, the book gives you everything you need to get up to speed, and if you're experienced in the industry, the second and third sections give you insight into the forces shaping the industry, and Alan's view on where it's going.

A must-read, and the book the OTT industry needed!

Mr. Wolk's book is a highly informative read that lays out the current state of Television's evolution in easy-to-understand terms, benefiting both the industry insider and the novice new to the topic. Everyone from studio executives to Jr. Account Planners should read this book. The changes brewing in this space have massive implications over the coming 10+ years; huge businesses will expand and contract, the levers of power will be turned on their heads and everyone involved (particularly at ad agencies) will need to retool their skill-set. This book is a great place to start that process.

W. T. "Roadblock" Harrell grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. An admitted adrenaline junkie in his early years, he raced on NASCAR-sanctioned tracks in Florida and Georgia with many of the great drivers from that era. Fast cars led to fast motorcycles, and Tony joined a 1%er motorcycle club in 1971. In the years to follow, he lived the high-speed 1970s lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. When that lifestyle caught up with him, he wound up serving thirty years in federal prison.
The world raced forward during those three decades, but because of his long confinement, RoadBlock remembers the towns and events as they were: before cell phones, personal computers, the internet, and bumper-to-bumper highways. His untarnished--and unvarnished--memories proved to be a great resource for this fiction series about the adventures of Joe Wilson and the notorious Regents Motorcycle Club. Good "one percenter" MC fiction

I liked this first installment in "The Regents MC" series a lot. The story is interesting and of course, many of us have a fascination with the world of the "One Percenters" Motorcycle Clubs. My one criticism of this story is that sometimes the prose is hard to follow which in turn makes the storyline hard to follow at times. But this is a minor quibble and if you hang in there you will find that there is an enjoyable and addictive storyline here. Enjoy. RJB

The Probate, a nice romp into a private world

RoadBlock Harrell has written a book that gives all of us a peek into the Outlaw MC life. The Probate has you involved in to the lives of the members of the Regents MC. The introduction of each member of the book is played well. However, I would have enjoyed more backstory on each of the members and characters. The read is easy and fun. At times you will think your right in the middle of the sceens, especially with Marge and the shopping cart. The author with his vast knowledge of the Outlaw MC's has you craving more into their lives to really know them and why they love the Outlaw life.

The story itself will hold you wondering what will happen next. The author allows you to root for some of the memers because you can see that they are men you will like even though they wear the patch on their backs. But it ended too soon for me. If you ride a Harley, been to any of the Bike Weeks, then you can relate to their lives, the places and most of all the devotion to the motorcycle.

I never write reviews but I really loved this book. This is the type of story telling and great dynamic characters that keep you engaged and turning pages. It is very refreshing to have a characters written that resemble the unapologetic, non-politically correct genre that was so prevalent 30 years ago and has slowly dissipated in American culture over the course of the that time.

I keep seeing this as a great movie or television series (as Sons of Anarchy was not) with Jason Mamoa playing Joe; similar to his character in the movie "Road to Paloma. Make it!!!
