Almost any dictionary that you buy of this brand Langenscheidt is of excellent quality. It's modern, with clear examples, it includes pronunciation and grammatic help. Very few pictures or images.

Sloppy work

There are problems with this book. It purports to teach you how to ask questions, but gives hardly any information about understanding answers. But worse, it doesn't give honest translations and so can lead to misunderstandings. For instance, if you want to ask "Is this seat taken?" the German words they actually give you mean "Is this seat free?" -- exactly the opposite meaning. If you think you will be able to sit down if you hear the word, "Nein," you will sit down when you have been told not to, thus looking like a total jerk.

Other translations could be cleaner. For "Do you understand?" the translation should be "Verstehen Sie?" Instead, they give you words that mean "Have you understood?" (Haben Sie verstanden). That's kind of okay, but unnecessarily complicated -- besides not being an actual translation.

This random freedom makes it impossible to construct your own sentences using ones in the phrase book as a model. Once I began to spot these oddities, it made me very nervous about trusting other phrases in the book.

As to organization, it's okay if you plan to go to a doctor's office or to complain about your meal in a restaurant. The little "info" paragraphs sprinkled through the book are a nice touch. The inside cover has "essentials" of hello, goodbye, yes, no, etc.; but the phrase I used most on my recent trips was "I'm sorry, I don't understand German." That one isn't on the inside cover. It would have been useful for the book to include several blank pages for you to write your own essential phrases, because your needs will be unique.

Even though I found the phrasebook to be pretty bad, the Langenscheidt dictionary seems pretty good, although it has words the normal tourist clearly doesn't need (the German word for G-string is string) and leaves some more useful words out.

My other reference materials are Pimsleur's German lessons and Frommer's phrase book (which includes helpful words to use during sex!). I vastly prefer these. While Frommer's is a little larger than Langenscheidt and will challenge your pocket, its printing is much clearer and it has a much easier pronunciation guide. It purports to include a dictionary, but you'd be better off with a real one that has lots of words.

About the Author
Patrick Alain is an internationally known developer of some of the best-selling video games, including such titles as the multi-awarded blockbusters Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The Leader Phrase Book was born out of Twitter and has quickly amassed a large following. Patrick was born in Paris, France, and has lived in a number of countries throughout his life. Fluent in five languages, he attributes much of his success to his ability to be a vital participant in large, multilingual teams. Big waste of money

Working as a Trainer/Coach for a big, multinational corporation, I purchased "The Leader Phrase Book" in the hope that I could use it to support my colleagues who are aspiring leaders. Unfortunately I have been disappointed by most of what I read.

A powerful person, a leader, is never rude, because rudeness shows weakness. A leader is supposed to be a role model and a role model needs to have excellent communication skills and show exemplary behavior.

Someone who felt compelled to say "You better shut your mouth before you put your foot in it" (p.26), "Did someone forget their ADD meds" (p.52), "No wonder you don't have any friends" (p.83), "Kiss my ass" (p.85) etc. is acting in a childish, bullying manner and is not the type of person that I could respect or would look up to. Furthermore, "Don't get your knickers in a twist" (p.143) is downright sexist. If anyone I know used half the phrases in this book, I would consider them aggressive, insecure and ridiculous.

The title of the book is misleading, most of these phrases having nothing to do with leadership. I think that "The Smart-Ass Phrase Book" would be a more accurate title.

Laundry list, ethics needed

This book.was a complete disappointment. Basically, it was a list of language to use in certain situations. The author included sarcasm (not a great strategy for 21st century leaders) and idioms (again, not great) He also included Machiavellian techniques and offered ways to make someone look like a fool. this is not the type of leader I want to be!!

I like the content a lot

I like the content a lot. It is a short book. It offers to the point positive thoughts. I did notice a spelling mistake ("wright" instead of "right"...I think Roy meant "right"...sorry if I'm incorrect). Based on the content, this author will learn from that and carry on. That is why I kept 5 stars. My favorite part is "Your life is happening right now". This author is also on Twitter and offers frequent positive quotes with beautiful art.

A must have!

Have you ever wanted encouragement and a little guidance in your everyday life, then this book is for you. We often forget the important things, our lives get so busy, Roy's well chosen words help me put them in their proper places. Like a gentle breeze to the soul it helps clear away some of the cobwebs, somehow I feel better about myself and those around me.

Women in European History illustrates the social, cultural, legal and, political conditions that European women have faced from the Middle Ages to the present day. It also explores women's ideas and ideals, their perceptions of the relations between the sexes and their struggle for civil, political, and social rights.

The book covers the long-standing European debate on gender relations and the roles of the sexes in society, which ultimately also posed the question of what is humanity. The study spans, among other topics, changes in marriage over centuries, women's role in the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, gender relations in the European welfare states, the European dictatorships and Nazi racism and the women's movements in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book concludes with an account of the emergence of historiography on women over the past two centuries.

About the Author
Gisela Bock is Professor of Western European History at the Free University of Berlin. She has published numerous books and articles on the history of women, including studies on gender relations in the modern welfare states, female poverty, women under National Socialism, and the European debates on gender relations.

Allison Brown has been a freelance translator of scholarly books and essays, largely in the fields of history and the social and political sciences, especially women's and cultural studies, since 1988. She has studied linguistics and German studies, and has an M.A. in translation science.

So far, so excellent

I found the first chapter of this book on the "Querelle des femmes" online in PDF form while researching a related topic. Bock's is the best treatment of the subject that I have found thus far and it made me very much want to read the whole book. The first chapter at least is clearly written, extremely well researched, well structured, thoughtful, insightful and sheds an enormous amount of light on the topic -- I'm very favorably impressed with the level of scholarship. If the rest of the book is this good Bock deserves a medal! I will amend this review when I've read the whole thing but so far, soooo excellent.

Well-researched, but translation only fair

This book has much to offer but I would not recommend its use in the classroom - - high school or university. The presentation is tedious and at times frustrating. It would, however, be a welcome addition to a library shelf.

A necessary read for anyone interested in the UAE

This is an excellent book, and is full of well-integrated information about the background to the ruling, and other, families, their role in the current super-development effort, and a general p[icture of the UAE. It is balanced and faftual. Not often do westerners try to understand the culture of the Middle East. I appreciated that the writer understands that Westerrn democracy is only one form of broad governance, and by no means the only one.

Brilliant Analysis

As a CEO for 30 years in the GCC--transferring technology in food, medicine, and high tech--I found Davidson's book the best source of profound analysis on the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He offers a highly detailed tribal analysis of "who's who" which is a labyrinthine task in and of itself, but goes to the heart of the matter of why one player is more important than others based on tribal relations. I have a library of books, and this rates as my top recommendation.

Lois dispatches Jackie to find Curtis. Enter strong, street-smart James Lanier, a cousin of Curtis's, who informs Jackie that Curtis is dead. An employee at Frank's store during the Watts riots in 1965, Curtis, along with three other black teenage boys, was found frozen to death in the store's freezer. This heinous crime was never reported (nor discussed within the Sakai family) and though white beat cop Nick Lawson was pegged as a prime suspect, the case was never solved and Frank closed the store permanently. As Jackie and James dig deeper into Curtis's past, their friendship (and awkward attraction to each other) takes its toll on Jackie's fading three-year relationship with girlfriend Laura. In chapters alternating past and present, clues are uncovered that romantically link Curtis's mother Alma to Frank. When a surprise suspect in the killings is fingered, it paves the way for a dark conclusion rooted in skepticism, injustice and racial intolerance. Somewhat overplotted but never lacking in vivid detail and authentic atmosphere, the novel cements Revoyr's reputation as one of the freshest young chroniclers of life in L.A.

With prose that is beautiful, precise, but never pretentious, she brings to vivid life a painful, seldom-explored part of L.A.'s past that should not be forgotten. A novel for the big city

There are not enough good things to say about Revoyr's Southland. The novel is beyond incredible and dare I say that Ms. Revoyr is perhaps one of the best contemporary authors of our time. It is a gripping and wonderful novel about tough times in Los Angeles county. Those who have lived through the era following WWII will relate to the heated, racial tensions between that erupted during the Watts riots. If you are part of the latter generation, you will experience a harsh dose of reality as you move with the main character in her search for the killer of four young African American men. The book is extremely realistic, staying true to the time period but also being captivating in that Revoyr's writing style is both creative and engaging. This novel will speak most heavily to native Angelinos but is transcendent and makes a terrific read for anyone attempting to understand the fabric of the star-studded town of L.A

I got this book for my class on Los Angeles history, and I really enjoyed it. The book flowed well and had a very entertaining storyline. This was one book that I actually took the time to read cover to cover rather than skim through. Though its been a while since I read this book, this book makes me smile whenever I think about it. I really appreciated following the narrator's path to self-discovery while she is seeking to unveil the truth about this history. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested.

Tour de force of racial disharmony in 1965 Los Angeles

Southland by Nina Revoyr is a tour de force that tells a story of racial disharmony within the seemingly gentle confines of Los Angeles. With the accounting of two families, one Japanese, one Black, we learn the story of how four young boys are intentionally frozen to death in a meat locker during the Watts Rebellion of 1965.

The Store owner Frank Sakai is a Japanese American who has been living relatively peacefully in the mixed racial neighborhood since acquiring the store. He'd been interred with his family at Manzanar and subsequently served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, a fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese descent who turned out to be the most decorated unit in American history. Returning home after the war he was able to purchase a small grocery story in Central LA.

Upon Frank's death in 1994 his granddaughter, a law student, and a black man who works with youth in a mid-city community center team up to find out the facts surrounding the death of the young men, why Frank had left $38,000 to one of them and mostly, who was responsible for the heinous crime.

The two initially explore their own family dialogues but find it difficult to pull together the remnants of the story. "No one talked about history" they lament. As the scope of the investigation enlarges and as each piece of the puzzle is moved into place the real story gets more complicated. Soon even they begin to doubt what they find.

The accounts of the Japanese Americans starting in 1939 along with the Black family chronicle starting six years later when the family of one of the boys moves from Texas demonstrates brave and stalwart endurance from both factions. I read a review of this book in which the reader said that his book club did not like the book because it was too sad. I feel that the thing that can make history most sad is only if we don't learn from it.
