About the Author
Dr. James M. Hunt�is an associate professor of management and former Chair of the Management Division at Babson College, in Wellesley, Massachusetts. There he teaches leadership, talent development and creativity. James has consulted to numerous business and health care organizations on the development of an organizational coaching capability, executive coaching, and talent development by managers. His current research is on the relationship between creativity, uncertainty and career development.� He co-lead the design of Babson’s innovative Talent Management course in the MBA Program and lead the redesign team for Babson’s flagship course, Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship.� Formerly, he was faculty co-director of the Babson College Coaching for Leadership and Teamwork Program and a founder and former faculty co-director of the Babson Executive Education Coaching Inside the Organization program, designed for organizational development and human resource professionals. James is coauthor of the book The Coaching Organization: A Strategy for Developing Leaders, a groundbreaking study of best practice companies and coaching, published by Sage (2007).

Dr. Hunt graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s of science degree and received a doctorate in business administration from Boston University Graduate School of Management, where he studied career and leadership development and work/life balance

Dr. Joseph R. Weintraub�is a professor of management and organizational behavior at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts where he serves as the founder and faculty director of the Babson Coaching for Leadership and Teamwork Program. He is also the faculty director of the Management Consulting Field Experience Program at Babson, an experiential project management program providing consulting services to both the for profit and not-for-profit sectors. Dr. Weintraub is an industrial-organizational psychologist who focuses in the areas of individual and organizational effectiveness including leadership development, coaching, team effectiveness, innovation, and performance management. His work on coaching has received several awards, including the “Management Development Paper of the Year” from the Academy of Management. He is the coauthor of The Coaching Organization: A Strategy for Developing Leaders (Sage, 2007). Dr. Weintraub’s work has appeared in a number of publications including the MIT Sloan Management Review, Organizational Effectiveness, The Wall Street Journal, the Journal of Management Education, and The European Financial Review.�

Dr. Weintraub serves as Faculty Director at Babson Executive Education, where he is the cofounder and codirector of Coaching Inside the Organization, an innovative certification program for internal organizational coaches. In addition to his work at Babson, Dr. Weintraub is also president of Organizational Dimensions, a management consulting and assessment firm based in Wellesley. He spends much of his consulting practice in helping organizations to develop their own coaching managers. He also develops and delivers leadership development programs in a variety of organizations around the world.� His clients have included General Electric, Bose, Fidelity Investments, Citizens Bank, EMD Serono, Boston Children’s Hospital, Ocean Spray, and T-Mobile. He is also the co-developer of InnoQuotient, a comprehensive survey tool that measures the culture of innovation in organizations.

Dr. Weintraub received his B.S. in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial-organizational psychology from Bowling Green State University.

Highly readable and practical. The best I have found.

The earlier editions of this book opened up the area of coaching and it’s utility in business. This edition simplifies the coaching model and makes it even more user friendly.

I particularly liked the chapter on the coaching friendly culture and the coaching relationship.

As an active consultant and former professor of management I especially was pleased that the authors interviewed a variety of executives and managers to add additional examples of how their principles of coaching actually applied in organizations.

Particularly useful in this edition is the chapter on “Distance Coaching”, since much of what happens today between manager and employee can occur when geographical separation is a reality.

This book is a highly readable and practical tool for managers who wish to create a learning organization built around coaching. It is the best coaching book I have found.

Included in this work are the historical facts surrounding the days of the Sachem Ansantawae, its likely discovery by Adriaen Block in 1614 (including a copy of his original map), the origins of the Captain Kidd legend. Kidd is known to have visited Milford and to have buried part of his treasure along Long Island Sound, the first home built on the island in 1835 by John Harris, the large resort, known as Charles Island House and later as Ansantawae House in the 1850s and 1860s, its use as a base of operations for a fish fertilizer company, causing considerable controversy among Milford residents and two legal actions, the famous prize-fight that went out of control, a religious retreat in the 1930s run by the Dominican fathers - a venture that got off to a sad start when six workmen from the retreat were drowned when returning from the island, its "almost" uses - over the years - Charles Island was considered for use as a summer anchorage for a major yacht club, an amusement park, a submarine-chaser base during World War I, a reformatory and a nuclear power plant, its role as a backdrop for several published stories including two written by one of the island’s owners. Three Charles Island stories are printed here for the first time in over 100 years.

Well researched and providing more photographs than I believed possible, Mr. Dooling has produced a excellent piece of work.

Charles island discovered

Great book. I have lived in Milford for all of my life. I remember being out there many years ago and seeing the grotto and some other foundations. I grew up hearing stories about a monastery, a prizefight, and of course Captain Kidd. The collection of stories was hard to believe until I read this book. Very we'll written and a great read.

About the Author

Christopher D. Moyes received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia in the area of comparative muscle physiology. After postdoctoral fellowships in molecular physiology at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Simon Fraser University, he took a position at Queen's University, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Biology. He teaches a spectrum of courses in cell biology and animal physiology, while continuing to pursue his research interests in molecular physiology and biochemistry.

Chris is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award. He is a member of the American Physiological Society and The Canadian Society of Zoologists and has served on the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada grant panel for Animal Biology. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed papers, including contributions to four books. Among his recent papers are Moyes, C.D., and D.L. Hood (2003) "Origins and consequences of mitochondrial variation in vertebrate muscle," Annual Review of Physiology 65: 177-201 and Moyes, C.D. (2003) "Controlling muscle mitochondrial content," Journal of Experimental Biology 206: 4285-4391.

Patricia M. Schulte received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University in the area of evolutionary physiology focusing on the role that changes in gene expression play in evolution. She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she teaches animal physiology and evolutionary physiology and runs an active research program. Using several species of fish as model systems, her research group is particularly focused on the relationship between genetic variation, performance differences, and fitness in a changing environment. She also conducts research into applied questions relating to fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic toxicology.

Trish is a recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award and several teaching awards, including the UBC Science Undergraduate Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. Trish is a member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. She is an associate editor for the scientific journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.

Well Written, Highly Approachable Physiology Textbook

I used this textbook for an intro level animal physiology class. Overall the book is very well written and approachable. Concepts are laid out simply and in an easy to follow format. If you are looking for a detailed look at underlying mechanisms than this book is not for you --but this isn't the focus of physiology as a discipline. Physiology is concerned with the larger relationship between biological structure and function. For instance, why cardiac cells are different from skeletal muscle. In this regard, the book is quite excellent.

This Textbook Is Incredible!!!

I took a killer physiology class and didn't want to buy the latest edition of the textbook because it was way out of my price range. I ended up buying this one and I am so glad I did. This book is incredible for anyone taking a physiology class, especially one that requires it. I hate reading textbooks and much prefer learning from the professor but I found this book easy to read and very very informative. It has the information you need in a format that is interesting so you can actually finish a chapter without falling asleep. I highly recommend this textbook!!!

You really have to force yourself to sit down and stare at the paragraphs, but it gets the message across eventually.

Organization and Environment by Lawrence and Lorsch

Lawrence and Lorsch's groundbreaking work "Organization and Environment" was a key step in the study of organizational integration. They used a precise definition, studied integration's impact on organization performance, and explored a subset of the factors that lead to integration. They defined integration as the "state of collaboration that exists among departments that are required to achieve unity of effort." and measured it by asking people to rate the state of interdepartmental relations on a seven-point scale going from "serious problems exist" to "full unity of effort is obtained". They used the term differentiation to refer to different departments having different structures and orientations (e.g. short versus long-term time orientation, relationship versus task focus, and high versus low formality of structure). A key finding of their research was that although organizational integration and differentiation were usually inversely proportional to each other, the most successful organizations simultaneously achieved high levels of both. Prior to Lawrence and Lorsch, organizational experts generally believed that issuing orders from above was adequate to achieve organizational integration. In contrast, Lawrence and Lorsch believed that integration required resolution of conflicts between departments through the efforts of teams and individual managers working both inside and outside of formal channels. These "integrators" need to be in the middle of the organization, and not simply at the top. Factors leading to effective integration included having an orientation that was intermediate between those of the departments being integrated, high influence based on competence and knowledge, and integrators being rewarded for achieving effective unified solutions. Moreover, high performing organizations resolved conflicts at the level in the organization where the knowledge (competence) needed to find a good solution existed. For organizations in stable environments this tends to be high in the organization, while for organizations in rapidly changing environments it tends to be lower down. High performing organizations confronted differences in perspectives in an open problem solving manner, rather than immediately finding a compromise, or trying to smooth over conflict, or referring the issue to a higher level for decision. Lawrence and Lorsch's recognition of the importance of organizational integration and its dependence on the work of "integrators" was a major step in our understanding of organizational effectiveness. The primary weakness in their work is that it focuses overwhelmingly on only one organizational integrating mechanism, namely the use "integrators" to resolve interdepartmental conflict.
