A book that forced a conclusion.

THE AFRICAN SONGBOOK: A TRAGEDY IN FIVE ACTS None of the three choices suggested for how I would describe the plot of this book would do justice to the way I feel after reading it. I have read stories and books, both historical and fiction, about the Mau-Mau uprisings before, and could describe them, yes, but this book was not like those. It is terse, compact, and it moves quickly, yet for all that it speaks to something inside. I remember reading newspaper and magazine accounts of these things when I was a youngster, and they were frightening, in a romantic, adventurous sort of way. But they never spoke to me as this book did. It may sound trite, or cliche, but this book managed to bring back a memory and make it more real than I had imagined.
I did NOT get the feeling that the author was writing it as an indictment, nor was it overtly judgmental, but in reading and reflecting on it, I myself arrived at conclusions that I realized I had avoided long ago. I will not share those conclusions here, as they are best reached within the depths of one's own being.
I would say this is a must read, a book that should be read with an awareness of those things past, and an anticipation of things to come. And I would hope that it is not too late.

Captain Harry Tennant has returned from serving in Italy and North Africa, expecting to be demobbed, only to find his services are still in demand.

A policeman before the war, he’s made part of the Intelligence Corps, investigating war crimes.

Mostly he looks into smaller cases of army personnel who are the victims, or perpetrators of crimes.

That’s how Rose Kearney’s file ends up on his desk.

Her brother William, a soldier with the Hampshire Regiment, was reported missing in action after D-Day. Having heard nothing else since, she’s travelling from their home in Wicklow to find answers.

As Harry starts to investigate, he learns Kearney was part of a carrier crew fighting near Caen.

The bodies from Kearney’s crew are found near a French chateau, with one appearing to have been executed.
But there’s was no sign of Kearney.

Reports of Nazi atrocities nearby are leaking out and at first, it seems the men were victims of the ruthless Nazi machine.

But things aren’t adding up for Tennant.

Why was Kearney’s body never found, and why was an SS officer discovered with the missing man’s disks?

Although his superior, Jekyll, wants the death blamed on the SS and quickly wrapped up, the more Harry digs, the more curious he becomes.

He sets out to find answers, but only seems to dig up more questions.

And it’s not long before Tennant find himself in grave danger…

Intriguing Post WWII historical

The Unquiet Grave is not quite a mystery nor a spy novel, but it incorporates elements of both.� Captain Harry Tennant's job is to investigate war crimes, not the big cases, but the smaller ones.� Most are a matter of form, putting together information from the records of both sides.� Oldman is a bit overzealous enumerating the complex movements of troops and the various officers.� It is confusing and detracts from an otherwise good story.

Rose Kearney's inquiry into her brother's disappearance is not something Tennant's group would ordinarily handle. There are aspects of the situation that put it in their purview.� Two of Kearney's comrades burned to death, but the third was clearly executed.� Kearney's remains were not found.� Tennant's superiors hope for a quick resolution, attributing the death to some of the German troops in the area.� Tennant, however, wants to find the truth and starts asking difficult questions.� Questions whose answers may cause more trouble and more danger than anticipated.

As a stand alone novel, The Unquiet Grave is a good mystery - a bit slow and ponderous, but with good characterization and thorough plotting.� I might be wrong, but The Unquiet Grave may be the first of a series, providing background for Tennant as he joins the newly formed MI5.

Well done Mr Oldman

It is post-WWII and Harry is a Captain working for a minor war crimes tribunal. England is in a terrible state with the rationing, shortages and unemployment – even a shortage of housing.

He and his team are given a file on a soldier who seems to have vanished. His three comrades are all dead, found at the site of their burned out carrier in France. With the countryside crawling with SS soldiers, the answer seems obvious. Or, is it?

What follows is an interesting and fascinating journey into post-war London and the detailed and intricate investigation into the missing soldier and his fellow soldiers.

What happens comes as a surprise to the reader.

Well researched, well written and steady paced, this novel will stay with you for a long time after you finish it.

I will definitely look into more of David Oldman’s books.

"Murder Over Cocktails" - Classy Tribute to Nick and Nora

The meaty information and "behind the scenes" anecdotes in this delightful volume, make "Murder Over Coctails" a must for every classic film aficionado. As many times as I have seen all The Thin Man films, I absolutely relished reading each synopsis (peppered with some of Nick and Nora's best dialogue). The challenge came when I had to quiz myself as to who-done-it, as author Tranberg is NOT forthcoming with that tantalizing tidbit. Tranberg does an excellent job paying homage to William "A Touch of Class" Powell, and Myrna "A Woman of Convictions" Loy. I sensed who they were as individuals, behind all that marvelous talent. Tranberg provides box-office and critical response for each of the 6 Thin Man films, making the book a handy reference as well as an excellent read. One of the book's highlights are the mini-biographies of the supporting cast for each film, as well as the producers, directors, and scenarists. Tranberg has done his homework on these people, and despite a few typos (ie., "Freund" becomes "Freud" at one point), he does a grand job of showing their major contributions to the film industry, their connections to one another, and offers a intimate glimpse into their personal lives. Nice selection of photos, too!

A Welcome Addition to a Film Library

Charles Tranberg, author of the highly-praised "I Love the Illusion: The Life and Career of Agnes Moorehead", has turned his attention to the Thin Man film series and offers a sterling effort with "The Thin Man: Murder Over Cocktails." It's a well-written and researched work and considering the paucity of material and interviewees available, it's a valiant effort, too. In writing a book about Nick and Nora's screen adventures, Tranberg has to compete with the sad reality that the internet has made books like this largely superfluous. However, I'm glad that there's even a Thin Man book available in this day and age. "Murder Over Cocktails" is informative, but isn't always focused on the film series itself. That's because there just isn't all that much Thin Man information around.

The set up in "Murder Over Cocktails" is simple: Tranberg lays out a brief plot synopsis, adds some memorable quotes from the film, includes a precious handful of anecdotes about the behind-the-scenes goings on, many of which have appeared in Jon Tuska's "The Detective In Hollywood" and Myrna Loy's autobiography, "Being and Becoming." The rest of the chapter is a rundown of blurbs from various press sources of the day, which extolled each movie's virtues, as well as the supporting players' career highlights. In fact, so much space is dedicated to actor biographies that I found occasionally myself impatiently flipping ahead in the dim hope that I'd find something else--anything--on the movies themselves. The index wasn't any help--there isn't one! Curse you, Bear Manor Press! However, these actor and technician profiles may prove to be the best thing about Murder Over Cocktails. And while it is nice to be able to get the full sweep of a performer's career at one's fingertips, I'd prefer that there was more about the films, even if it were just photos, extended dialogue, or publicity materials. It's also unfortunate that Tranberg didn't dedicate some time on the actual era in which these films were made, instead of merely listing the personnel's film credits. Was Nick Charles the ideal American male? Was Nora the feminine ideal? What about those other Sleuthing Couples? The book includes a decent selection of photos, some of which I hadn't seen before, and instead of an index, the back of the book has a supporting actor portrait gallery, which varies in quality; some actors' photos are from much later in their career; Sam Levene's (Lt. Abrams in the second and fourth films) picture looks like it was taken in 1971 rather than 1941.

Despite my own (mild) disappointment with Murder Over Cocktails, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the book to someone just getting interested in The Thin Man movies, as it would serve as a good primer in learning about the actors and behind-the-scenes technicians involved. And there's something to be said about any book getting published about the Thin Man films. This volume is dubbed "#1 in the Film Series Series. Redundant title aside, I hope there are more volumes in this new series, as it would be great to have future volumes cover the Andy Hardy, Blondie, Bowery Boys, and Charlie Chan films. For the longtime fan there's nothing here we haven't already read before, but I guess I'll have to accept the fact that there's a finite amount of Thin Man information out there!

A great book about a great series. Lots of behind the scenes stories. The exhaustively researched bios on all involved actors, producers and directors has me creating a must see list of more movies. The bios are cross referenced and very thorough. The only thing I wish that there were some more behind the scenes photos instead of the stock studio shots.

About the Author
Jon M. Conrad is Professor of Resource Economics in the Department of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1973 to 1977, joining the Cornell faculty in 1978. His research interests focus on the use of dynamic optimization techniques to manage natural resources and environmental quality. He has published articles in the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Land Economics, Marine Resource Economics, Biomathematics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Modeling and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, where he served as an associate editor. He is coauthor, with Colin Clark, of the text Natural Resource Economics: Notes and Problems (Cambridge University Press, 1987) and past President of the Resource Modeling Association. Cambridge University Press published the first edition of Resource Economics in 1999.
