How do you meet user-access needs? What do user's digital demands suggest about a proactive acquisitions role in vendor negotiations? How will you perform acquisitions in the future? Author and leading authority known for teaching the popular course Fundamentals of Acquisitions offered by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), Jesse Holden presents an accessible, much-needed guide to twenty-first century acquisitions work and its vital, though often overlooked, role in the wider context of librarianship. Holden's one-stop guide addresses both fundamental concepts and their translation into practice. Holden thoroughly explains how the changing dynamics of content formats and consumption, access, service, and technology have wholly altered the acquisitions framework. He gives readers strategies and approaches for dealing with an abundance of daily tasks and common issues in acquisitions practice, including a workflow model, staffing, ordering processes, working with vendors, receiving and accessing content, budgeting, and more. A concluding section expands on the field's emerging user and content-focus, and a comprehensive index helps further acquaint readers with key terms and definitions. Whether you are an experienced professional adapting to changing practices or new to acquisitions, Holden provides invaluable on-the-job training to benefit you and your library.

Once primarily an item-driven process, acquisitions is becoming “increasingly involved with the provision of access to content in a variety of formats.” This work offers a conceptual approach to acquisitions, beginning with a discussion of “The New Information Universe” and how it will (or should) impact common practices. Subsequent chapters cover the changing nature of acquisitions and the need for professionals to take a more proactive role in acquiring content and connecting people to it. Acquisitions as a service and future trends are also discussed. Each chapter has its own list of references, and a general list of selected resources is organized by format: online courses, e-mail lists, conferences, journals, and Web sites. Easy to read and written for both novices and seasoned practitioners, this is a useful book for any librarian performing acquisition duties. --Sara Marcus
Review
"Holden sets out a concept-based approach to acquisitions, covering key traditional concepts like ordering, receiving, dealing with licenses, and using integrated library systems and online vendor databases in the acquisition workflow, while integrating those concepts into a new model that emphasizes the role of acquisitions in overall library access and service in addition to procurement." --SciTech Book News, June 2010
"...provides rich and, what matters most, essential information...the book would be an asset both to the teachers and students of library science (maybe even bring back acquisitions to the mainstream in educational librarianship programmes), as well as to the practicing librarians who will be definitely learning new things or see their own ideas expressed in a most intelligent way." --Information Research, August 2010
"....Holden provides a comprehensive introduction to acquisitions work, outlines a conceptual framework for acquisitions work, and thereby defines the continuing role for acquisitions practice...While it is nice to see an acquisitions book that is theoretical, it is especially nice to see one that is both theoretical and practical." --TechKNOW, July 2010
"The intended audience of the book is both new information professionals and more experienced acquisitions practitioners...this book is suitable for both. Holden's emphasis on redefining acquisitions work away from processes and towards a more service-oriented approach will be a change of perspective for some existing practitioners and a contemporary introduction to new professionals as to what can be achieved by acquisitions units in the new information age." --Ariadne, October 2010
"...this is a very useful and concise contribution to the understanding of acquisitions. It lays out past and current acquisition practices clearly for any novice to understand, as well as providing an interesting discussion on the changing paradigm of acquisitions for the more experienced reader." --Library Review, July 2010
"This book is a well written, strategic overview of all the components and relationships involved with library acquisitions...I would recommend this book for those currently working with acquisitions as well as those in the library industry, especially students, requiring a more strategic understanding of the current and future implications of our changing information environment specific to acquisitions within academia." --Australian Academic and Research Libraries, June 2010
"Easy to read and written for a novice this work nonetheless also serves the seasoned practitioner with details of new methods and practices. This is a useful book for any librarian performing acquisition duties." --ARBA Online
"Jesse Holden has contributed a timely book about library acquisitions that addresses the changes that have occurred in this part of our field in the last few years...Holden captures the changing nature of the acquisitions realm while it is indeed in the midst of upheaval." --Against the Grain, February 2011
"I found Acquisitions in the New Information Universe to be an informative, sensible, and well-written theoretical overview of a subdiscipline that 'tends to be misunderstood--even by other librarians' and recommend it." --Technicalities, July/August 2011
"This book is a well written, strategic overview of all the components and relationships involved with library acquisitions…I would recommend this book for those currently working with acquisitions as well as those in the library industry, especially students, requiring a more strategic understanding of the current and future implications of our changing information environment specific to acquisitions within academia." --Australian Academic and Research Libraries, June 2010

I found this book to be an interesting discussion of how acquisitions practices have changed now that much of the information we're purchasing or licensing is electronic. Author Holden makes it clear in the first chapter that we need to make a paradigm shift in acquisitions. No longer can we be content with knowing where to buy something, but we also need to be aware of the many ways to provide access to specific information. This change in responsibilities is increasing the competency level expected of acquisitions staff.
Chapter 2 includes useful discussions about services that vendors provide, vendor relationships, and selecting a vendor. Chapter 3 provides information about the many formats in which information is available, and provides some background on traditional and emerging acquisitions workflows. In Chapter 4, Holden discusses the services that acquisitions units provide, and encourages the systematic collection and analysis of feedback to continually improve those services. In Chapter 5, the author encourages us to "radicalize" acquisitions. By this he means that we must "move definitively away from models that are based on the fixed linearity of process or standardization of information objects." (p. 108). He stresses that we must base our practices on service needs, use vendors and technological solutions when possible, and explore collaborative efforts to "leverage resources and streamline workflow." (p. 109).
I found this book to be an interesting and stimulating discussion on the state of acquisitions today. I think it would be most appropriate for someone who is already familiar with acquisitions processes.
