About the Author
K. C. Nicolaou is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego and is Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and holds the Skaggs Professorship of Chemical Biology and the Darlene Shiley Chair in Chemistry at The Scripps Research Insitute. His impact on chemistry flows from his works in chemical synthesis and chemical biology described in over 550 publications and 55 patents.
Tamsyn Montagnon received her B.Sc. in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Leeds, UK, which was followed by a move to the University of Sussex where she obtained a D.Phil in 2000. She was awarded a GlaxoWellcome post-doctoral fellowship and joined Professor K. C. Nicolaou�s group as a postdoc. She is now assistant professor at the University of Crete.

Fantastic Book

I love this book. Compared to Nicolaou's Classics this is a coffee table book. It is beautiful in its presentation, with a plethora of pictures and artwork throughout. Each succinct chapter is exceedingly interesting, with detailed historical accounts of the molecule and the personalities involved.
Ultimately, this is why I love the book: the author's have managed to present the people involved in the discovery, and synthesis of molecules that have changed the world in an accessible way and in an artful format. My already intense interest in organic chemistry has multiplied after reading a couple chapters. If you're at all interested in the history of organic chemistry, especially if you're a graduate student working with natural products, you'll really enjoy the book. If you can balance it, a chapter during a column is manageable.

Very nice and visual book. Has a lots of historical background information with pictures of people in volved amparati used and of the pharmaceutical agents. Beautiful depiction of the molecules themselves with various structural representation techniques.
Great book for the novice or beginning chemist, a very nice coffee table piece.
But this is NOT an in-depth reference book for medicinal or pharmaceutical chemists seeking ADME or PK information etc.
Otherwise a very interesting and animated colorful chemistry book.

Many Magic Molecules

I have to agree with some other reviewers: The author has published a good volume with a peculiarly self-promoting bias and concentration on his labors over the years. On the other hand, this guy is sharp - we in San Diego are losing him to Houston. When ego is supported in-fact, we must simply call it genius.
In all, it's a good way to reflect and marvel upon the diligent efforts of dedicated and smart researchers in the science. Hats off!
