Women and Power within the Ottoman Empire.

First off the book explains WHY female harems existed in the first place. The simple answer is this. If the sovereign gets married to a Princess of another power that power could lay claim to the throne. BUT if he has offspring with a bunch of slaves, women who are not of the Muslim faith and are not linked to powerful families, than outsiders could not lay claim to the throne by right of blood.
Yet don't think these concubines were powerless. In fact, through their sons and daughters, through networks based on retainers, son-in-laws and slaves, they gained great influence and wealth. Mothers of princes, wives and royal mothers to the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire, they were a big part of the inner workings and political events within the palace.
They were eyes and ears of the Sultan when he was away, they were symbols of benevolence and powerful diplomats for the Empire, they were tutors and guardians for their sons.
The book has a helpful glossary, a two page genealogical chart, two maps and is VERY detailed. I would suggest this book ONLY to people interested in the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East or women in history. It is also VERY dry.

A serious look at the lives of women in Ottoman Turkey

This book might be a disappointment to someone looking for gossip about life in the harem as envisioned by writers of fiction. But for anyone really interested in understanding the role of women and the domestic household in the royal court of a great Muslim Empire, this is the real thing, brilliantly researched and thoughtfully presented.

Even a non-expert like myself can appreciate the superb scholarship and eloquent style of a book about the Ottoman Imperial harem. A topic, about which too little is written and what little there is, tends to be fiction. I hope to see more books about Ottoman history and culture.

Dr. Karmen facilitates The Coaching Visitation Program that works with families toward reunification after experiencing severe trauma. She was the assistant pastor for the University Church of Metaphysics for many years. Her book “The I AM Solution Simple Practices to Transform FEAR back to LOVE describes her journey through traumatic experiences to a life of triumph. Dr. Karmen Smith has taught that we can see the Divine everywhere even in those that are violent, angry and the hardest to love. Dr. Smith is a guest lecturer at the School of Social work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a dynamic speaker. She has conducted groups in Juvenile Detention and in the Child Abuse and Neglect shelter teaching children and staff; they are not the events that happened to them. I absolutely enjoyed reading the "I AM" Solution e-book. I am inspired by the authors personal story of turning trauma into triumph. I have now gained a greater understanding on how I can turn my personal trauma and fears into triumph. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read such a wonderful book. In reading this book it has provided me with the continued inspiration and hope that I need for a bright future. I now better understand that everything that shows up in my life is directly connected to who I truly believe that " I AM" inside. I now better understand that the path to changing my world begins from inside out.

Not so good- VERY GOOD (Reviewed)

The writers tell you how they use a scale from one to ten when asking questions but nowhere in the book explains how to exactly go about using this 1 to 10 scale... Does the pendulum points at charts with the numbers? Do I need to formulate the question 1 to 10 times about the same issue or subject until a get an affirmative answer? They should've included a couple of lines explaining a little more in depth for those newbies in dowsing.

Reviewed on 01-05-2014 : After getting a reply to this post from the writers of this book I am changing my rating to a VERY GOOD and 4 STARS- My comment prompted for a future update of the book where at the very beginning it will indicate that the 1 to 10 scale system and how to use is located in the appendix section of the book. I stopped reading it half way through so I did not even get to this appendix section; in reality the explanation was always there it is just that would've been nicer if the reader (especially those new to dowsing) would've known before hand to avoid confusion. Issue solved. Great job in following up with their readers and followers!!

Great book for the dowsing/muscle testing field

This is a wonderful book for learning how to formulate your questions for optimal dowsing and muscle testing. The Percy's work in this field is through and superb. I first ordered the book for my new Kindle but found that I really needed the printed format so that I could outline, underline and happily mark up the book to suit me and make it most useful for me and my work. So I bought the print copy as well. If you dowse or muscle test in any form you should find this book invaluable.

If you want to be a more accurate dowser, this is the book!

The art and skill of being specific in your questions is perhaps the most important aspect of developing a successful, accurate dowsing practice, and Maggie and Nigel Percy have written the best book I have read to date on this subject. It's detailed, thorough, and gives additional resources to further your dowsing education. The information on using both sides of the brain is new to me, and I believe will help take my dowsing to a new level. Anybody can learn to dowse; however becoming an accurate dowser takes regular practice and additional knowledge. They've given the knowledge in this excellent book. Now it is time to put these tips into practice.

A "must read" for Young Earth Creationists!

I finished reading this incredible resource on the Genesis Gap (Gap Theory of Creation). I have been reading books on the subject since 1982 and this book is one of the best and most extensive I have read on the subject.

Steven Dill has really done his homework and he thoroughly documents his statements with Bible Scripture backing and with sound science and common sense in his book. His debate offered, in response to some Young Earth Creationist views, that attempt to convince Bible-believers, that the earth and universe are approximately 6,000 years old and that the current creation we live in, is the only one revealed in the holy scriptures, is done diplomatically, soundly but very thoroughly, leaving little room for legitimate argument against a Pre-Adamic creation.

This book is the very resource I would recommend to those who believe this study does not have sound biblical and scientific backing. If you believe you've been thoroughly given a full representation of this study, I would compel you to reserve that decision, until after you have read this book by Steven E. Dill. I have added a five-star rating to my review.

A study of the 'Gap Theory' from a fresh perspective

If you are a proponent of the Ruin-Reconstruction interpretation of Genesis creationism (commonly referred to as the `Gap Theory'), then you will find this book a blessing. Shortly after I published my own book on the subject ("The Bible, Genesis & Geology: Rightly-Dividing Geology and the Book of Genesis"), it was suggested that I read "In the Beginnings" by Steven E. Dill. I did, and I was very glad I did.

Steven's book presents an exhaustively detailed examination of the Gap Theory from the perspective of a trained Biologist. Consequently, because of his biological science background, he has discovered a startling connection about the Bible's translation of the Greek root-word `katabole' and the meaning of the phrase "...from the foundation of the world..." that will astound you. I found it a wonderful revelation and I certainly recommend this book as an excellent research resource.

He shaped the treatment of intersex, advocating experimental sex changes for children with ambiguous genitalia. He pioneered drug therapy for sex offenders, yet took an ambivalent stance towards pedophilia. In his most publicized case study, Money oversaw the reassignment of David Reimer as female following a circumcision accident in infancy. Heralded by many as proof that gender is pliable, the case was later discredited when Reimer revealed that he had lived as a male since his early teens.

Despite the title, this book is interesting and has a lot to offer. I expected it to be a hatchet job by some lit crit people, but it actually is thoughtful in discussing the work of Dr. Money. Sometimes they get as caught up in obtuse terminology as does Dr. Money, but it is still generally readable.

In the preface to her engaging narrative history of feminism, No Turning Back, Estelle Freedman thanks a woman we should all thank, someone who asked her to recommend one book that best presented feminist scholarship to date. Realizing that her only suggestions would require the woman to read extensively across a range of disciplines, Freedman set out to provide that book herself. The result is an expansive but eminently readable history of feminism, its political roots and objectives, and the case for its centrality to the future of women.

While displaying an in-depth knowledge of her field in discussing women's rights, work, and the more recent history of women's political strategies, Freedman also demonstrates a willingness to engage in critical thinking beyond her own sphere and range; she explores subjects ranging from the development of labor and social roles across centuries and cultures to the ways in which race, class, and other social hierarchies inform and define different "feminisms." Acknowledging that her book does not "tell a single, unified history of revolutionary triumph," Freedman examines issues related to politics, economics, race, relationships, health, sexuality, and violence within the context of feminist history. Stanford historian Freedman (Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America) offers a comprehensive, accessible synthesis of interdisciplinary feminist scholarship, placing feminism in a global, historical framework. Freedman begins with theories of the emergence and diversification of patriarchy, outlining the ways that urbanization, colonialism, capitalism, and industrialization have intensified gender segregation and gender, race, and class hierarchies. Women's resistance to male oppression also takes many forms specific to national identity, ethnicity, and class. As Freedman points out, feminism appeared after 1800 in Europe and North America, when capitalism and republicanism emerged, creating "both the need for feminism and the means to sustain it." But while feminism was already an international movement by 1900, after 1970 it became pervasive, and Freedman's discussion encompasses not only national and cultural differences but also feminism's expression in the multiplicity of women's activities, ranging from waged work to reproduction to artistic creation. As women's political movements define much of the global agenda for the 21st century, Freedman concludes, "the quest for universal recognition of women's equal worth is not likely to be reversed." Good intro to feminism book but not earthshattering

I think this book would be a great present for any independent high school/college-aged woman in your life who is starting to wonder if "feminist" is a dirty word.
If you're unfamiliar with the history of the feminist movement in the U.S., or even what feminism means, this is a great book for you. Professor Freedman is an engaging writer who doesn't get bogged down in academic gibberish, nor does she insult your intelligence. Not surprisingly, Freedman teaches an "Intro to Feminism" course at Stanford, and therefore if you've taken such a class in the past 15 years, much of the material may seem quite familiar.
Her book takes readers on a whirlwind tour of feminism in the United States. She makes an effort to not fall victim to the first wave feminist tendency of assuming that all women in the U.S. are upper middle class, heterosexual, and white, yet touches only briefly on international feminism and the future of women outside of the United States. While this is understandable, as the book would otherwise be 1000 pages long, perhaps a title clarifying that it is focused on the U.S. would be helpful.

An accessible intro to feminism that ties together the past and the present

Freedman has managed to write a history and a survey of global feminism that is at once accessible, activist and academic.

The compact size and the colorful comic-inspired cover design of the trade paperback edition bely its serious scope. It is truly comprehensive, opening with a powerful argument for feminism (lingering on the term's ever-troubled, never-popular nature), proceeding through the history of various feminisms, marching on through topics as diverse as the impact of globalization on female laborers in the developing world to contrasting feminist opinions on the agency of sex workers. While the focus is primarily on the U.S., the global perspective does comes through. She manages to tone down the usual prominence of European and Euro-American influences while elevating the profile and contributions of feminists throughout the world. For the global sections, examples are drawn as readily from China and West Africa as from the United States. Freedman raises the bar for creating a feminist narrative that is continually mindful of the influences of class, race and culture as well as gender concerns.

I recommend this book for committed feminists, those lamenting the so-called `death of feminism,' and for closet feminists who are bothered by the f-word.

introduction to neurosurgery for the junior medical student

Kaye provides a concise introduction to neurosurgery with good coverage of major topics. Chapters are short and enable the student to read while on rounds. Ideally, you would supplement the reading with a true text or original articles. Nevertheless, a good first start.

Excellent for Rotations

I read this book cover to cover before starting my Neurosurgery subinternship and it really gave me a great overview for the patients I saw in clinic and cases I scrubbed on. The text flows nicely and it is easy to get through in a couple days, yet detailed enough so you can sound intelligent when talking about the topics. Good illustrations too. I would say this is a good read before the rotation starts, and then I recommend Handbook of Neurosurgery while on the rotation for specific cases.

This book has exactly what it promises, the essentials. This reads more like a brief text book over view of topics rather than a how to like the Handbook of Neurosurgery does. It still has its place however as it has a great section in the beginning explaining imaging. It also has good info as far as mortality rates and the like for the conditions listed. It explains the topics (many of which were not covered in my PA program) in a way that any practitioner with a higher than novice level of medicine can understand.
