Of the several main contenders covering the diverse field, Tong's may be at once the most comprehensive and representative

Although I would agree that this text isn't a nail-biting page-turner, I have difficulty believing those reviewers who found the primary texts by the likes of Butler, Cixous, Irigaray so much livelier, more accessible and clear than Tong's explanations. Post-structuralist criticism, especially following upon the heels of French thinkers like Lacan and Derrida, became dense, esoteric, and difficult beyond the understanding of even many Ph.D.s with its specialist jargon and self-referential, seemingly private, inquiries/demonstrations into the limits and possibilities of human language. Feminist criticism--originally influenced heavily my male thinkers in the areas of structuralist, post-structuralist, post-modernist thought--was no different. In fact, its frequently recondite, difficult, and impenetrable prose led to many revolts by undergraduate women against feminist theory itself.

For this reason, Tong's book was especially valuable during feminism's heyday--an organized approach to the entire field as well as an accessible explication of the major, primarily female, feminist thinkers. Given the movement's declining influence as the 1990s came to an end, it was important that Tong came out with this new edition--not only to address developments since the 2nd edition--including the so-called "backlash"--but to serve as a reminder that even if feminist theory had lost much of its popularity and influence, it was still alive--and many of its most influential voices, if less heard from due to apathy and new priorities, were merely waiting to be rediscovered by later, intellectually curious students.

While there are always those who will deride "theory" (French theory, especially, has never been popular with American academics), thinking about what we normally do without thinking--in effect, thinking about thinking--is critical to the life of mind which, in a desperate world where only survival and political action count, becomes a "necessary luxury," a sure sign that all human actions and behavior aren't determined exclusively by the herd. Moreover, theory offers a useful paradigm, a structure, a conceptual framework for what would otherwise be an occasionally diverting but rather incoherent chorus of various, individual voices. The danger we face, especially since the downloading, piecing-out, and "atomizing" of texts by the many individual hyper-spatial "files" (fragments of what were once whole and complete works, albums, suites) is exactly the sort of disarray that theory seeks to organize and clarify--and to do so without "reducing" the original works and their authors to mere talking points and topic sentences in an overly broad, sweeping, homogenizing overview. Tong's strength is that she covers the field without misrepresenting its individual voices. The reader has every right to trust her and her carefully chosen words.

Textbook.

Purchased for a WMST class. Very, very dry. Hard to tell if the material or the way this was organized and written made it so dry, as a lot of feminist work is very interesting and dynamic. If used in a classroom setting, effective. If you're picking this up to learn about feminist theory for fun, I would reconsider.

Excellent intro to the many feminisms

This is the best source I've seen which defines the various feminisms (e.g. liberal, marxist, existentialist...) Tong describes the assumptions of each position and then presents supportive and opposing views. Her approach encourages the reader to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each position. Very balanced presentation with plenty of illustrative examples.

User friendly

I've been using this text for the last 4 years with intermediate ESL students. The exercises and their instructions are easy to understand, nicely sequenced, and allow for a measure of creative writing that the students can enjoy. There should be an accompanying answer booklet to help negate any student protests to the teacher's answer choices. However, that said it is a very easy writing series for ESL teachers short on preparation time.

Atom and Eve
I was interested, as a UK author, to review this book as 'ARIA Left Luggage' written by a UK author, and having a similar theme (something altering the human psyche) won a prestigious US award. Sadly, the similarity ends there. The UK author did tedious research into the possibility of his 'problem', an amnesia causing virus, and the credit list is impressive.
Jeff Yager has a writing talent but I feel his debut book has not received the detailed editing needed. The story of a drug to help a mysterious flu (how it differs from ordinary flu is not clear), and its side effects when something extra is added, is the main theme. Knowing US food and drug laws, I cannot see, even given the emergency,it would have been released without intensive testing first when the side effect would have been revealed, and I am sure a respected reviewer would pick up this mistake. There are several examples of the common mistake, 'show, don't tell,'eg 'telling' us about the faulty ingredient and its future effect, and cheques coming regularly to make Mandy rich. Editing faults such as,'Sam walked out of the Donut Shoppe and walked..' A wopper comes near the end. A bullet goes into someone's head. 'His body dropped to the ground, with all signs of life leaving his body.' Wow! It doesn't end there because his body lies motionless on the highway! It is poor editing that can make a book fail

But when the solution to the country’s quickly declining population becomes the source of strange biological developments in all who take the drug, the consequences may be too extreme despite the benefits. Through a journey of self-discovery and unlikely alliances, Ricky discovers what it truly means to walk a mile in another’s shoes—and how to use those shoes to your advantage when fighting for your life.

My thoughts:

An excellent debut novel by Jeff Yager, ATOM & EVE is gripping, fast-paced, and will keep you guessing with every turn of the page. The plot is imaginative and daring, and the author provides us with a handful of unforgettable characters. Yager's ability to emphasize the issue of gender roles in this young adult novel is impeccable, and he sheds light on the idea of tampering with the natural world in a science- and technology-driven society. A great read for anyone interested in science fiction, dystopian fiction, and young adult fiction, in general!

This one keeps your attention!

Non-stop action but more appropriate for upper aged teens. This is an interesting story and one that starts jumping from the start and the action does not stop. A pandemic is something we all fear. Those that take shortcuts with our DNA and biochemistry to fight the illness make a great story. However, there are a few things in this story that are a little improbable - but this is fiction. The gender roles and affects on each are presented in an interesting view.

The characters are described well and the story leads you to want to know more about each and how they fit together as they all come from diverse backgrounds. I would have liked to seen more emotion in the characters especially those affected by the violent acts that befall them.

The diverse characters and backstories are pulled together into the main plot at the end. Keeps the reader guessing but sometimes a little confused. The transition could have been smoother and I would like to have seen it drawn out a little more instead of jumping from scene to scene so rapidly.

There are second chances for most characters in this book. A feeling of vendetta rings through in the story line as bullies and infidelity are dealt with. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Politics and economics are described but do not bog down the story line with too many details that would bore a young adult reader.

Overall, a good quick read that keeps the attention.

The Authors have clearly 'been there, done that' as indicated by their highly pragmatic illustrations of HOW to move from ideation to creation. As an educator, this is inspirational and I am looking forward to implementing many of the suggestions in my classrooms. For the Reader looking for a self-help tutorial into these Methods, I can recommend no better Source. This is the sort of book one keeps on hand and uses often.

This book is great. The pictures in it are super bright, you learn a ton of information about the heart and body, and of course...The Magic School Bus books are always fun reading for kids and adults. This isn't a short book...the pages are filled with text. This is one of those books that I read to my son before bed, but he knows we aren't going to read the whole book before bed, but rather over 2-3 days. A fun read though!

Good for children with heart defects

My second grade son with a heart defect found this book very helpful when I tried to explain to him the state of his heart when he was born. It was also very helpful to his kindergarten brother. It quickly became both a favorite and a reference book.

Magic Schoolbus can't go wrong

This was another excellent Magic Schoolbus adventure. My beginner reader 7 year old can read it with just an occasional help with one or two new words.
