He has over fifteen years experience in exploring additional distance learning media and providing communication and technological support for distance learning programs as well as developing online learning courses. He has participated in projects related to distance learning, online synchronous learning, and the virtual classroom.

Gulsun Eby is an Associate Professor in Applied Communication at the College of Open Education of Anadolu University. She undertook graduate studies at Anadolu University, Turkey (MA. Educational Technology) and at the University of Cincinnati, USA (Ed.D. Curriculum & Instruction). Dr. Eby has over twenty-five years experience in focusing on the democratic and multicultural aspects of distance education. Unless your instructor/school requires you to use this book, don't buy it. It's a waste of time and money. It overly simplifies a lot of important concepts and there is virtually no calculus in the text (you have to know calculus to do microeconomics). Since it's not math based, you're forced to accept a lot of theory/concepts without the proper mathematical proofing. While this probably isn't appropriate for an introductory/first micro course, it definitely isn't appropriate for an economics major or any intermediate course.

If you actually want to learn microeconomic theory, I would suggest any edition of Nicholson/Snyder's Microeconomic Theory which gives better examples and practice problems, not to mention it integrates the calculus you will need to use in any intermediate course.

Beyond disappointed.
I was concern that I would not be receiving an access code for MyEconLab with Pearson eText, the one most important item that is required for most classes. Opened my package, looked around it and notice that there was no key around, strange. Usually outside the clear wrap. Thought it was inside, but nope. Checked the description to see if it did not include it. But it should... i felt cheated and very disappointed since all of my purchases from Amazon at this point were perfect. It's mostly frustrating since I need the access code as soon as possible for my class. Guess I'll just buy it off the website. Good job scamming a poor college student.

This lexicon, among other things, is a tremendous guide to the people and places we find when we travel within ourselves. So very few religious texts describe the higher heavens in very much detail. This book offers specifics about each level of Soul's existence, and a plethora of words you can chant in contemplation to see what you can see for yourself!

This was an excellent book. I've been a member of Eckankar for over 20 years, as well as follow some of the other spiritual paths that all fall under the same umbrella: Paths of Light and Sound (L&S). There are many different paths that follow L&S, so to choose which is right for you: follow the one that resonates best with your person. And yes, that can change over time, which is okay. And no, you don't need to know all the terminology to go far within this path - I'm a living, breathing example of this, and yet, it hasn't hampered my Astral (OBE) experiences in the least.

Lately, I've been enjoying a master's talks on Sant Mat - another soul travel path utilizing L&S - by watching and listening to IshwarPuriJiSantMat talks on *theyoutube. *Purposefully written this way so Amazon doesn't delete the reference. And for whichever path you choose, happy travels! Astral and Soul Travel are very real, so I hope all that's reading my review pursues this endeavor.

One more thing: Remember, these paths are not religious paths (okay, maybe they are registered that way for tax purposes), so you can continue to follow your religious path, yet still enhance your spiritual experiences with an L&S spiritual path.

I found this book to be an excellent companion to other titles I have bought from this publisher and author Harold Klemp. It is very well written and a simple to use guide. I recommend it to anyone who has read any of Harold Klemp's other works. It's a useful and practicle reference book.

An entertaining, if dated, review of King's early work

Part Biography and part review of King's literary and film works (up to the mid 80s at least), this book was very interesting. The author is an avowed King fan, so it is not a surprise that he praises everything King wrote up to that point (of course, all that stuff was awesome, so I can't fault the author for that).

I learned a few things from the book, including the fact that the Dark Tower series was expected to be released as a large collection of short stories (The Gunslinger is a collection of 5 related short stories, though now we just consider them all one book). There are several references to The Cannibals, including its original title "Under the Dome," which it eventually retook when it was published recently. I found the most interesting aspect of the book was finding out when King wrote everything (books weren't necessarily written in published order and some of the story collections were written over many many years).

I'd like to read an updated version of this book, bringing in all the work he's done over the 25 years since this book came out.

Classic Study of the Works of Stephen King

Stephen King: The Art of Darkness constitutes a commendable study of the themes of Stephen King novels by Harvard lawyer and book critic, Douglas E. Winter, who has spent a lifetime delving into the works of the grandmaster of horror, featuring King's own interpretation of his works as well as the influences that went into the writing of the novels, including the prevailing topical concerns of society that found its way into the works, as well as the personal problems faced by King that are reflected in the characters he creates; in particular, The Shining - which reflects King's struggle for recognition amidst a Cocainne and booze addiction coupled with intense feelings of rage which he successfully suppressed.

This study deals with all major works by the author, including movie adaptations and works in progress and incorporates a bibliography featuring upcoming novels and movie adaptations that are scheduled for future production, and represents a comprehensive study of the works of one of the most prolific and influential writers of popular fiction.

Highly recommended for King fans

"Winter has taught me things about the novels of Stephen King, just when I was no longer sure that was possible." -Peter Straub on the back cover.
I bought this book soon after it was published in the late 1980s. Even though it is 30 years old, it's an excellent survey of the first part of King's writing career. Winter writes very well, and brings a scholarly analysis to his essays. He discusses the influences on King's books and short stories - literary and popular culture alike - and the political and social undercurrents in his ideas and characters.

Not Enough Humbug!

P.T. Barnum's work was his life. He wasn't an artist and had no spectacular talent except to be able see it in others, exploit and publicize it. He was both a subversive and Victorian, a phony and a realist, a humbug and an exposer of it. From our perspective we most want to know how he did he do it? The moralizing and actual exploits are less interesting than are his techniques which are very relevant today.

"Humbug" Neil Harris's biography of the early seventies isn't so concerned with how and more with the what. We learn that he got his start with an outright hoax, the Joice Heth affair in which he bought as an act a slave woman who claimed to have been George Washington's nurse and 161 years old. We do learn the maxim, even bad publicity is good publicity when he encouraged people to challenge her authenticity. He may have done more than encouraged it, he may have created the challenge.

He goes on to form the American Museum which was more like a circus than a Guggenheim or Smithsonian. And he ends his life with the Barnum Bailey three ring circus built upon his concept of the American museum. There was the finding and promotion of Tom Thumb, the huge and lucrative success he created for Jenny Lind the famed opera singer and for Jumbo the elephant.

One tale from the book suggests its frustration. We are told that Barnum was responsible for getting tens of thousands of people to greet Jenny Lind at her arrival in America. This attention was critical for stoking the excitement upon which her success depended. Yet we learn little about what Barnum actually did to attract such a crowd. This is important because people didn't show up simply for the love of Jenny Lind since most people didn't have a clue who she was. Barnum must have utilized a range of tricks to create that kind of excitement but we learn about none of them.

Overall, the book is a good overview of Barnum's career and provides a small window on the entertainment culture of 19th century America. If someone knows of better and more definitive biography of the great showman please leave me the title in the comments.

Great Overview

This book gives a great overview of the life and times of P.T. Barnum. It doesn't go too in-depth about any particular parts of his life but does touch on just about everything he did. It's a great entry level book into the world of P.T. Barnum.
