About the Author
Elvina T. Pearce studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova and pedagogy with Frances Clark. She was a founding faculty member of The New School for Music Study, one of the founders of The Frances Clark Center, Editor-in-Chief of Keyboard Companion magazine from 2000-2006, and has been actively involved with NCKP since its inception. As pianist, pedagogue, composer, and clinician, Elvina is internationally recognized for a rare combination of excellence, creativity, and practicality.

A Piano Teacher and Student Dream Book

I could hardly wait to get my hands on this material because it is not a text book. It is a valuble, readable, personal, applicable, "put it on the piano music rack" gem of a book. The content is rich with discovery and insights that apply on many levels for students (and yes you piano majors), their teachers (be it a home studio to the university level) and even parents. I am confident, no matter how many years one has been a piano instructor or student, you will have some great aha moments. We all need to be in the mode to continue to learn, re-think and be stimulated in our disciplines and passions. The way the book is organized is a further joy. You can easily find and delve into different subjects on different days. However, I assure you it is a divine treat to read from beginning to end. Keep your notes handy so you are ready to import her creativite, passionate experience as a brilliant educator into a life-application read. Any student and teacher knows that we need to expand, review and learn how to effectively and meaningfully practice. Elvina Truman Pearce takes us there and beyond. She certainly did this for me over 40 years ago and thus remains applicable today. My students and I personally continue to appreciate her direction and influence in the studio and my professional life..

In it, Mrs. Pearce excels at describing a successful, common sense approach to teaching. Many Reasons for Reading "The Success Factor in Piano Teaching"

Whether you are a piano teacher, a professional or in any other line of business, this book is a fascinating read. Following the life of Elvina Pearce is most interesting and her teaching methods find parallels in many other areas. One of her teaching methods, "Understanding the whole should precede drilling on the parts," has its parallel in mathematics where "the whole is greater than or equal to the sum of the the parts" is actually a mathematical concept. Her emphasis on practicing until a concept is mastered will put one in good stead in any endeavor of life. There is also a good analogy between Mrs. Pearce's philosophy of asking her students how they think they performed a certain piece rather than beginning by telling the student what she thinks and the successful professional conducting a performance review for an employee--starting the review by asking the employee how he or she thinks she did with certain pre-set goals. This book is well worth reading regardless of your background.
