About the Author
K. C. Nicolaou is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego and is Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and holds the Skaggs Professorship of Chemical Biology and the Darlene Shiley Chair in Chemistry at The Scripps Research Insitute. His impact on chemistry flows from his works in chemical synthesis and chemical biology described in over 550 publications and 55 patents.

Tamsyn Montagnon received her B.Sc. in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Leeds, UK, which was followed by a move to the University of Sussex where she obtained a D.Phil in 2000. She was awarded a GlaxoWellcome post-doctoral fellowship and joined Professor K. C. Nicolaou�s group as a postdoc. She is now assistant professor at the University of Crete.

Fantastic Book

I love this book. Compared to Nicolaou's Classics this is a coffee table book. It is beautiful in its presentation, with a plethora of pictures and artwork throughout. Each succinct chapter is exceedingly interesting, with detailed historical accounts of the molecule and the personalities involved.
Ultimately, this is why I love the book: the author's have managed to present the people involved in the discovery, and synthesis of molecules that have changed the world in an accessible way and in an artful format. My already intense interest in organic chemistry has multiplied after reading a couple chapters. If you're at all interested in the history of organic chemistry, especially if you're a graduate student working with natural products, you'll really enjoy the book. If you can balance it, a chapter during a column is manageable.

Very nice and visual book. Has a lots of historical background information with pictures of people in volved amparati used and of the pharmaceutical agents. Beautiful depiction of the molecules themselves with various structural representation techniques.
Great book for the novice or beginning chemist, a very nice coffee table piece.
But this is NOT an in-depth reference book for medicinal or pharmaceutical chemists seeking ADME or PK information etc.
Otherwise a very interesting and animated colorful chemistry book.

Many Magic Molecules

I have to agree with some other reviewers: The author has published a good volume with a peculiarly self-promoting bias and concentration on his labors over the years. On the other hand, this guy is sharp - we in San Diego are losing him to Houston. When ego is supported in-fact, we must simply call it genius.

In all, it's a good way to reflect and marvel upon the diligent efforts of dedicated and smart researchers in the science. Hats off!

A Pioneering Work on Markets and Traders

This is the book I would recommend to anyone interested in trying his hand at the stock market.

It is not, however, exciting, by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it a book to read over the weekend. Magee takes his time, and the reader would do well to take his time also.

This is a book to think long thoughts about. It is not at all difficult. It is, in fact, very easy. But the concepts which it addresses are fundamental, in the deepest sense of the word, to an understanding of what markets are, how they work, and what one can expect to earn from them.

It's been a few years since I posted this review, and the current edition at $50 is a bit stiff. An earlier edition is available at half the price. Scroll down.

I red this book once and about thirty years ago. I remained immediately impressed by the original and strange way to face problems of communications between traders, brokers and the entire world around the stock exchanges of the world. After so many years, I still remember the intriguing profoundness of its contents and now I know how the entire financial world is totally dominated by these unsolved problems of communication much more that by rationale behaviour and logic reactions of people involved.

This boxed set is a complete collection of the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a nine-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1864.

Meet Addy introduces the reader to Addy, a slave girl living on a plantation in North Carolina. Life is hard for Addy and her family, and her parents decide to escape to the North and freedom, but disaster strikes when the master sells Addy's father and brother. Now, it is up to Addy and her mother, and Addy will have to do things much harder than she ever contemplated!

In Addy Learns a Lesson, Addy and her mother arrive in Philadelphia and freedom. Unfortunately, Addy begins to learn that freedom in the North is not what she expected it to be. Racism pervades this new world, and even the African-American girls of her own school are not all friendly. Along the way, though, Addy learns about friendship and perseverance.

Addy's Surprise - With Christmas coming up, Addy spots the perfect gift for her mother, a bright red scarf. However, when their church puts out a plea for money for those arriving from slavery with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Addy and her mother decide that their money should go to those less fortunate. In this book Addy learns a lesson on giving and receiving, and hope.

In Happy Birthday, Addy!, Addy makes a new friend in the form of M'dear, a kindly old African-American woman whose blind eyes see more than most. Sadly, as Addy learns more about her new life of freedom, she learns more about the racial discrimination that pervades the world around her. It's up to Addy, with M'dear's insights, to see the way forward in such a dark world.

Addy Saves the Day - With the war over, Trinity A.M.E. Church decides to hold a fair to raise money for those hurt or displaced. Addy's idea for the children to hold a puppet show and sell the puppets is warmly received, but everything looks gloomy when she and Sarah are partnered with Harriet. Everything depends on the girls working together, much more so then they realized, so the girls must come together to overcome.

And finally, in Changes for Addy, with the war over, but so many ex-slaves displaced, Addy and her family still hope to find sister Esther. In yet another winter, Addy finds the good and the bad, gain and loss, and hope and the cost of freedom.

As with all of the American Girl books, the final chapter of each of these wonderful books is a highly informative look at life in America in the 1860s.

What can I say? The books are all excellent, and this set is a wonderful thing, a great gift for your American girl. I highly recommend it!

A doll collector's dream

As a collector, I was skeptical that I would be able to find a brand new set of American Girl Addy's original six books. However, this is exactly what I was looking for and I couldn't be happier! Pristine in plastic wrapper! Very happy with my purchase.

For anyone serious about understanding social theory, you should read this book. It has great examples and is easy to understand if you put in the time and read it seriously.

Misprint on the entire first half of pages.

When I received my book, which was for a summer 5 weeks class, half of the first 60 pages we missing words and was not able to read. I had an exam the next day and did not pass the exam because I could not read the required material. I will never buy a book from Amazon again.

Yikes! That Was Scary!

The title of this book tells the reader that the sisters had a very close call on this adventure. They were nude as they always are wherever they go. It is never on a dare but this time they came very close to being discovered by the park ranger while they were very naked and vulnerable. Fortunately, Jane and Jem moved silently as cats and then froze on top of each other when they were less than 30 feet from being discovered by the authorities which could have landed them in jail. You'll feel the fear and concern as you read, but don't worry, the story has a happy ending. Enjoy!
