The name of Donald Hebb is perhaps the most quoted name in modern neuroscience. It is Hebb's hypothesis about how the neurons in the brain are changed by learning that dominates the current discussions of the cellular basis of memory. Yet it is a small fraction of those who use the phrase "the "Hebb synapse" that are familiar with Hebb's major work. This book is Hebb's retrospective discussion of the various topics that he thought so deeply about. This book, like his more accessible (but more dated) Textbook of Psychology, offers a clearly written, insightful, and easily understood summary of the thinking of one of neuroscience's most profound and influential scholars. It offers unique and broad insights into the nature of the mind, the brain, and the relation between them, and it is a shame that there are so few copies still in circulation.

Mature reflections of a brilliant scholar

This book is almost absurdly expensive for a small paperback ($80 when I bought my copy), but I am really glad I spent the money. Donald O. Hebb, famous for his important 1949 book The Organization of Behavior: A Neuropsychological Theory, here sets out his mature thoughts on a variety of big issues in psychology and philosophy. Cell-assembly theory is here too, and updated to reflect thirty years of research since Organization was published. One of the things I appreciate about Hebb is that he had a big vision for psychology and for what it meant to understand human thought. I learn as much from his perspective as I do from his particular theoretical claims.

Review of D. O. Hebb's Essay on Mind

I was more than satisfied with this book. Although it was based on scientific material which was obtained before 1980, it was timely and relevant. Donald Hebb was a giant in the field, not just because of his knowledge, but because he realized that if we are to make progress in understanding the mind and consciousness, we must not be reticent to speculate in the process of providing the experimentalists with theories based on introspectively obtained data.

A Moving Mystery Touching on Dark and Powerful Situations

The mystery surrounding Mandy Miller, 'The Lost Child' is encircled around you as a reader from the opening paragraphs of this book. Set in a small Devon village it is very easy to get your bearings and visualise the countryside settings including all of the people. It is easy to see how such a shocking event as the disappearance of child would turn such a village into a time capsule and the sense of the trauma affecting almost everyone who lives in the village is evident.

Our main protagonist Elaine is very hard to read at first but it becomes more evident as the book continues that she is very shy, withdrawn and has been held back socially for much of her life. She is quite unsure of herself and the death of her Mother whilst leaving her free to pursue her life in the way she has always wished for has also left her completely unsure of how life is supposed to be lived without this very overpowering character in her life.

This is most evident in the fact she wants to get away from the home she lived and grew up in with her Mother but the only place she could think to go to was the village where her Mum came from to scatter her ashes rather than somewhere for her to actually relax and unwind.

I connected with Brodie straight away. The young girl from the council estate, always wearing black baggy clothes and angry. Her negative feelings towards Mandy, her sister, were understandable given the impact Mandy's disappearance, long before Brodie's birth, had on her life. Despite her outwardly negative appearance she has the feel of someone who wants love and attention and it seems natural that her and Elaine connect in the way they do and find comfort in each other.

The other characters comfortably, and at times, uncomfortably, weave in and out of the story at the appropriate times building the suspense and drama of the situations that Elaine and Brodie encounter through the weeks the book covers.

One of the things I was most impressed with was that various mental health issues are tackled, some in passing, some more directly, but given that mental illness is such a huge part of our society (as a reviewer with bipolar I know a little about this) I sometimes get a bit disheartened by the number of books I read where this is never brought up, or it's only ever in a very negative light. This book covers it in a very normal way, showing people with mental illness can be good, bad or indifferent. Very much like people without mental illness.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and very easy to read, I highly recommend it to readers who like a mystery but something that isn't too dark.

This story intrigues from the first page!

Some stories intrigue from the first page. This is one of them.

The Lost Child is a well crafted debut from Ann Troup, rich with intricate plot twists to lure the reader into believing one knows exactly where the story is headed, only to discover (much to the reader’s delight) there is yet another layer to the action, another character’s psyche to explore.

The captivating emotional development is one of the strengths in this book, but I also applaud the vivid imagery; sometimes on the edge of eerie, always able to create a clear picture of the scene. Troup leaves little crumbs through each chapter, a trail of secrets, to lead the reader on a journey of heartfelt depiction of how past decisions impact the present and dictate the future, as one travels through a maze of emotions, actions and reactions, to find resolution in the end.

The impactful statement of the story stays with you after you finish reading, not in the intrusive manner of Jean’s ashes, but rather on a thoughtful, intellectual level exploring how sometimes lies become reality and the opposite becomes true. I finished the book in two days. A very enjoyable read!

This book pulled a little on the heart strings for me. But it was great! Easy flowing and easy to follow. Great story plot and characters! It will have you glued from start to end. You will think you have it all figured out and that's when the author throws something else at you!

About the Author
Paul Blackah joined the RAF in 1976 and trained as an airframe fitter. In 1993 he was posted to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. His specialized knowledge of vintage aircraft is considered crucial to the maintenance of the aircraft in the flight. In the 1990s Paul was closely involved in the restoration-to-flight of the Messerschmitt Bf109F 'Black 6'. He is co-author with Alfred Price of the Supermarine Spitfire Manual. He lives in Lincolnshire, England.

Louise Balckah is also an aircraft enthusiast and has worked with Paul on his other books.

Frequently fascinating, but only for serious WWII aircraft buffs

The iconic Supermarine Spitfire was the subject of a Haynes "workshop manual" co-authored by Paul Blackah in 2006. While that book touched upon the subject of modern-day Spitfire restoration, the subject occupies the majority of this book. Every step of the process of restoring a relic to flying condition is covered, from disassembling and detailing parts, sourcing components, engine restoration, fuselage assembly, painting, ground tests, and of course, filling out hundreds of pages of paperwork.

As someone fascinated by modern-day aircraft restoration, I got a kick out of the many excellent photographs of disassembled Spitfires and their components, along with the detailed asides from people involved in Spitfire restoration. I only noticed a few photos previously used in the 2006 manual, so you won't be re-paying for material you already own. Still, like a lot of Haynes books, this book doesn't get much of a chance to "breathe." It was advertised as 224 pages before release, but seems to have been cut down to 202 right before publication. The photos are great, but I found myself wishing there were longer photo captions, or more detailed text descriptions, to accompany them.

I might be addicted to Haynes' "manuals," but I always find areas for improvement in them. The Spitfire Restoration Manual is no different. It has a lot of great material in it, but it doesn't really gel together quite as nicely as Blackah's previous Haynes titles. Still, If you enjoyed the Spitfire "workshop manual," and are seriously into aircraft restoration, you'll probably enjoy this one too.

Had great expectations

I had waited a long time for this title and had expected much more from it from a technical perspective. Perhaps as I am an aerospace engineer I am being a little unfair as for the average person this is probably adequate.
Technically it just seems to be lacking; with a little more attention to detail it could have been so much more.
Criticism aside it does provide a general overview of the steps that need to be taken to both aquire and restore a Spitfire, arguably the most sought after of WWII warbirds amongst the thriving restoration community. It provides good photographs and a number of original Supermarine drawings of various parts to illustrate some of the challenges faced by the restorer of an aircraft designed, engineered and manufactured in a bygone era where quite often the materials used are no longer available, and the processes used in manufacturing parts and assemblies have been forgotten.
Overall I enjoyed this book, but felt wanting for more substance on the technical aspects.
